I was looking at defensive coaches who have worked with Saban and Dooley since he is obviously looking for coaches he's comfortable with.

I found one that Saban has talked fondly of in the past.
John Thompson - Georgia State Athletics

Anyone have any thoughts/ opinions of this coach or have any idea of other coaches who's paths have crossed with Dooley's/ Saban's/ Thompson's in the past that haven't previously turned us down or who would have interest in joining the VOLS.

He is actually a good defensive coach. Trouble with TW is he's known as the Tigers X HC. So recruiting my not be receptive.

It looks like we need a guy who coaches LB or DL and will be the DC. I am not sure about Tommy West.

Bring in The Reverend Al Wilson to coach LB's and Lance Thompson to DC
Do this. And for the rest of the SEC, consider yourself forewarned. OR how about we just make Rod Wilks DC? Or Rod Wilks could just be the defense all together by himself.

Travis Jones was on Nick Satan's staff with Dooley as the DL coach. He is the assistant DL coach for the Saints now. It would be a promotion. I am sure his NFL ties are appealing. He may not be interested. I don't think Al Wilson is interested in being a coach either. I have never heard him say he wanted to coach. If he did, I think he would have coached under Fulmer or at least be a grad assistant to learn to be a coach.

Karl Dunbar (DL Vikings) was at LSU (DL) with Saban and Dooley.

He is a great coach but not at all a realistic possibility. He is rumored to take over as Vikings DC when/if Leslie Frazier accepts a HC job.

I do think now is the time to get Al Wilson involved in coaching.

Bring him in as a GA and see what he's got. I'd love to give him the chance and see him on the sideline.

I think he's got the mentality for it, and he's definitely got the personality for it... but no proven history of being a coach.

I've been thinking the same thing! I know there has been a question of Big Al's unproven ability to coach, but he knows the position, and what better way to learn the coaching ropes than from an SEC staff? There would be no question, in my mind, that he would "give his all for Tennessee". Question is, would he even be interested?

You obviously don't go to many Memphis games. If it wasn't for Deangelo Williams TW would have been fired years ago. Aside from a few years under Joe Lee Dunn and Tim Walton, UM's defenses have been horrible to say the least.

Rod Wilks is so bada$$ that when he's about to run through the T, the Pride of the Southland Band morphs into a W out of fear and respect.

Would have been hard for Al to have been a grad assistant under Fulmer considering he was playing in the NFL. That would explain why he never worked under Foolmer.

Al Wilson is more likely to come back to UT in an administrative role, as team chaplain. Not sure he wants to get into coaching per se is what I have been told. He would be great for the role that "Mitch" Mitchell filled a few years back. I think Mitch went to Duke with Cut.

I like the idea of Jones being at least the DL coach. In 2003 as DL coach LSU had a school record 44 sacks. Not only is Dooley familiar with him from LSU he played at UGA and is a GA native, the latter part of that can only help as we try to raid GA talent.

Wasn't his last year in 2006? Fulmer left in 2008 but I think Al was still trying to make it back from injury with the Lions. I have just never heard of him wanting to coach but I wish he would. Maybe he could be a grad assistant or NFL assistant to see if he wants to coach. I heard he owned a real estate business or something and was very happy.
