Defense Wasn't Horrible

Defense was adequate at best. We look somewhat soft on the defensive front against the run though. I expected us to be much better on the d-line. Against good SEC teams, we will have to be drastically better on D as well as every other phase of the game.

Took them the first half to get used to being chop blocked. 2nd half they pretty much played shutdown football.

I think our defense was limited by the way App State runs their offense. They are a run first team so it was not your traditional approach to defense. Our biggest strength is pass rush and we didn't have that many opportunities to rush the passer. Although when we did, I thought we did a decent job for the most part. But they ran some very creative run plays. You could tell they really wanted this game.

Did we have a sack or QB pressure? I listened on radio and didn't see the game. Is the only thing needed to neuter our defense is a lot of runs and misdirection?

Tackling was poor the entire game. There were quite a few missed assignments. Second half was definitely better than the first, but tonight's performance is not going to get us close to the SECCG.

Jancek might be feeling smug tonight: It's not so easy sometimes when the offense sux. We almost let them drive the field for the winning FG on the last drive of the game.

It's the worst I've seen in quite a while. Like someone mentioned in the game thread, why would any high school stud WR want to come here?

For real. They were stopping our run, but we're giving up passes. But we refused to just keep throwing. It worked 8/10 times.

Our D couldn't contain the edges all night, more so on Vereen's side (multiple guys in there not just Vereen).

But... When was the last time we made positive halftime defensive adjustments? At least that happened tonight.

Barnett didn't have a sack, but he did have multiple occasions where he pressured the quarterback when given the opportunity, and it truly affected some plays. They had a fluke screen touchdown play, but other than that, they had no real passing offense.

0 sacks. I was disappointed in our tackling and the lack of enthusiasm.

props to Abernathy on the 4th down stop in OT -- its been awhile since the Vols have had a meaningful 4th down stop

For comparison app st rushed 3 and sacked our running QB twice. If our D was adequate, theirs is superb. I doubt they have better athletes or coaching.

Give me a break. He was the sole reason we lost against Florida.

Did they tell Dobbs not to scramble? His strength is as a runner, if the pocket is collapsing or no one is open he should tuck it and run IMO

Betting he had orders to stay in the pocket and execute the game plan. That has to change... sooner is better.

0 sacks... On about 3 opportunities. When they run it 80% of the time, sacks aren't possible.

Against a small quick deceptive rushing attack, the D line made great adjustments. App St didn't score after we were down 13-3

Better than "not horribly", they actually played really well and without their emotional leader and best LB.

Yes, there were plays here and there that concerned me and they rolled over on the drive after the Cam fumble, but overall a nice performance.

Best thing...Shoop did not let off the gas in the fourth. OMG, what a concept. Keep doing what has been working, and if anything increase the pressure. We flat whipped their ass in the 4th with the exception of their final drive prior to end of regulation.

And against slightly better talent with slightly better clock management (which we will most certainly face this season) we would've lost by 3. That last drive had me scared, and against Appy St. that doesn't bode well for what's to come. Defending against a (triple) option when they constantly have second and short is very difficult (see Air Force, 2006), and it was good to see that once we stopped any gain on first down, their offense ground to a halt. Still incredibly lucky to walk away with a win tonight.
