This is my first comment of the season, but I have watched every game. I can't understand how the coach can make such a statement in his press comment. Strout would probably had not come out if he had not thrown the ball across his body. We had just watched Jennings run down field open for about 18 yards before JG finally lobbed the ball over to him after the safety had arrived. We had just watched JG throw the interception in the red zone. When there is an injury to QB the backup is expected to come in and run the offense. We all saw with several minutes left in the game Strout was inserted and was instructed to hand the ball off three times, and then we punted. A couple of first downs and we would have had a shutout. I know the coaching staff and most of the people on this website know more than me, but I have watched every game and I can not see that JG is our best option He is slow to react, still stars down receivers, holds the ball to long, and panics in the red zone. I am certainly for the one that gives us the best chance to win, but in my opinion, neither of the two hat played tonight gives us the best chance.. I hope we edge closer to that Bowl game next week in Lexington, get those players healthy and play the kind of Volunteer Football that I remember and Love.

Quite possible the reason he has no faith in Strout is because it is like he has not been there all season .......

I assume your response to the comment involves the misspelling of Shrout's name--some low hanging fruit you're stretching up real hard to reach...lol. Address his intent, if you're able. Personally, I'm not sure I agree with him. I like Shrout with some more experience. How about you?

Yes I was just being stupid. I think Pruitt struggles with the gunslinger mentality that Shrout appears to possess due to his inexperience. I think Pruitt is trying to protect Shrout from himself to a degree. I completely agree with holding out Maurer for this game to see if they can escape with a win without using him. I like both Maurer and Shrout. I like that they both appear to be fearless in different ways. Both are more mobile when being pressured. Both get the ball out much faster , more often on target and without 90 percent of the throws going to check downs. I think based off how the team has reacted the short time Maurer has been in the game that the locker room is in his corner. Right now I think I play Maurer if healthy and if not you have to give Shrout a chance to make a few mistakes going forward. JG is a constant string of mistakes over and over and over. He is just not that talented. He was able to manage through this one. We are going to need more than a manager in the next three games if we want to be competitive. My opinion is that Shrout plays more tonight if UAB was not in such a giving mood. They made it real easy for Pruitt to take the easy route and play the more experienced guy because they kept giving us the ball. If the game was closer I think Pruitt lets some slack out on Shrouts leash and tells his OC to be more aggressive. The game never presented a need for that . I do not know that I would have done it any differently in the first half if I am Pruitt the way it unfolded. In the back of my mind I feel that maybe Pruitt has settled on Maurer as his guy at least for now but wanted to try to give him another week to recover and that is why we did not see as much of Shrout tonight. At least that is where I am at with the situation. EDIT - Maurer and Shrout also appear to have more Chutzpah and that is a quality I think you must possess a great deal of to be an SEC QB. JG clearly is tough as nails and can take a hit but the game is clearly bigger than he is when the chips are down.

Little by little, Strout is starting to build up some quality game experience. Kind of like Grey with Run Blocking.

Good post. I agree with all points except I'm afraid your assessment of Pruitt's awareness and intent might be giving him too much credit in this case--and I'm a Pruitt fan.

Now you know Pruitt will say anything to us to defend his decisions. No matter how dumb it sounds. Just like he tried to tell us how bad JT and Maurer was.
You would almost think JT didn't know what the mission of an offense was to do.
I don't believe much of what he says at all. I still say the fan base is smarter than he thinks we are.

I would like to know why fans are so high on Maurer? I stated this in another thread but Maurer has 5 interceptions in 4 games in which he never played the entire game, probably 2 and a half quarters each game. Yes he has shown some ability he also has turned the ball over a lot. Thoughts

I agree. I don't dislike him, but I haven't seen enough of him to think he's for sure the guy on a white horse coming to save us.

There are certainly concerns. I think the reason I like him so much is it just appears he wants to be there more. I like to see a guy with some fire not only when things go his way but more importantly when they do not. I am not over sold on Maurer. That being said , it is much better to me than watching JG make the same mistakes as a redshirt Junior and come off the field like a 4 year old who just dropped his ice cream. Maurers mistakes are made through aggression so far. That can be coached out of you more easily than fundamental flaws in your mental process. JG's mistakes are mechanical/mental and have not gotten better and I do not see it ever getting better. Give me a guy with arm talent who can get the ball out on time and I will coach him to not be an idiot. I don't want the guy who still can not read the defense in time to get through his progressions and get the ball out in year 4 in the program.

He moves the chains and can make dynamic plays. Yes, that comes with some mistakes, but I think most of us can live with those as long as we are being aggressive.
