Defense Next Year

What about the LBs to run it? We don't have a lot of SEC talent in the LB corp.

I would like to see us go back to the 4-3 also. This year Dooley and Sunseri were trying to fit a square peg into a round hole and we just didn't have the depth at LB for the 3-4.

Depth or type. Lathers is not a 3-4 LB.

I agree with your starters BB and I agree we need to go back to the 4-3...here's my 2-deep:

DE: Miller/Walls
DT: Couch/O'Brien
DT: McCullers/ Phillips
DE: Williams/Smith

SLB: Harris/? (Maybe Vereen or Levenberry)
MLB: Johnson/Bynum
WLB: Maggitt/Lewis

CB: Bonner/Thomas
CB: Coleman/Gray
FS: Randolph/Moore
SS: McNeil/Maybin

Just a couple of regarding things I've seen you talk about before:

1. A lot rests on the health of Randolph and Maggitt...when healthy they're 2 of the best at their respective positions...but we've all seen plenty of examples of what an ACL injury can do to players mentally and physically

2. The status of Phillips and Bonner concerns me...both are the caliber of player we need at their position...it would be tough to lose either and great to see them get their act together and contribute

3. Vereen and Maybin being EEs is huge...I expect both to be I the 2-deep because of this

4. I'm not ready to give up on Moore...5 picks is nothing to shake a stick at...I think the right coach and system can make a contributor out of him

With some fortunate health and barring significant attrition I think this D will be poised to make a significant jump next year

If Corey Miller starts next year, we will be in same predicament we are in this year at DE.

Corey Miller doesn't play bad when he's in. And guys like Trent Taylor will push for time. But everybody has their preferences.

Does anyone else find Jacques Smith to be a little disappointing production-wise? I thought this kid was going to be a consistent sack guy but that just never came to be.

I agree with this but i think Sentimore moved to DE backed up by Walls and we run a little Weakside Strongside. I just dont see Corey Miller contributing very much. I also think LaTroy Lewis will get a look at Weakside DE along with Smith and Williams. I would like to see Smith at OLB. He has good speed and is an undersized DE, it would benefit him more down the road.

Anyone think Zanca will see the field next year?

If Zanca starts the season at LB, then there is a major problem with Harris, Propst, and the rest of the crew. I think it really helps that he is an EE. I think they will gradually work him in with special teams and mop up duties.

This all depends on the scheme and the progression of the personnel.

If I was confident that Sentimore would be back next year I'd definitely put him in there...but I'm not confident in that at all...It's the same with my projected 2-deep on O...I don't have Bray, Hunter or Patterson in that...

And as far as Miller is concerned..last I checked he was tied for 2nd in TFL's and tied for third in sacks and QB hurries despite playing limited snaps...I think he could do very well as the starter at SDE in a 4-3...his previous experience in the 4-3 was out of position as a DT so you can't really judge his performance there...a lot of people forget Robert Ayers was basically a no-show until his last season...I'm hoping for the same type of senior season for Miller

I just dont see 4 guys from a 5-7 (ya im optimistic) coming out early for the draft unless potential grade problems. And corey miller is way down the list with only 8 solo tackles on the year and no sacks. And you might be right about him playing out of position and with as bad as our defense has been I hope our coaches have been wrong about everything and playing everyone out of position haha

edit: correction 1 sack

CP, Sentimore, and Bray would be the only ones leaving for the draft that grades could possibly play into their decisions.

Hunter, McCullers, and James could all leave for the draft because of their skill (as could some of the others) but their grades are good enough to come back if they choose to.

Heresay says that CP, Sentimore, and Bray would have all been ineligible had we made a bowl game...

Miller plays about 1/4 of the snaps and is still no worse than 3rd amongst DLs in every major statistical category...

And I understand and agree that 4 players froma team this bad shouldn't have the option of going pro early but every draft board has Hunter, Bray and CP on it...and Sentimores issue is grades so he's not on the 2-deep because there likely won't be a choice for him

Then yes of course Sentimore wont be here, then maybe miller will have a shot. I just worry cause i dont feel like he will be accustom to the spot due to lack of time there. And to another poster it obvious Smith has the speed but whether he has the football ability when it comes to adapting to another position is all im worried about. The last two coaching staffs have seen his ability i just don't this he gets it to be honest.
