I've been very impressed with the defense considering the injuries but I have a serious question about our pass defense. it comes when we are trying to defend the fade pass. I haven't kept count all year but it feels to me anytime a team throws a fade on us our defenders never get their head around (except cam sutton). we are playing with our backs to the ball and trying to get in the way or knock it out of the receivers hands as soon as he touches it (leading to a lot of completions or pass inter fences). does turning around for the ball once your fifteen-twenty yards down field really slow you up that much? it's seems to me teams either complete the deep ball or get a pass interference over 50% of every ball thrown to the perimeter deep and even when we have safety help they are not quick enough to get to the boundaries to help (Todd Kelly did pick one off yesterday even though it was a duck under pressure and more to the middle of the field). personally I feel Florida saved us by not throwing more vertical routes in the second half and Texas am threw outside with ease when they attempted. if I was an offense coordinator id be airing it out against our corners. just wondering if someone could explain to me this coaching concept. thanks.

Georgia had the same problem when Willie Martinez was on staff. His DB philosophy seems to be to play the receiver and not the ball, which has been the root of a lot of the PI calls we are getting as the DBs are never even looking for the ball.

Our secondary has been a weakness. We need someone to step up.

secondary has been a weakness for years and years.....

Cant be youth cause Foreman is a sr and Mosely is a jr. Its talent. Foreman is a pretty good nickel guy but not a true corner. So is Gaulden. Kelly is slow (he makes a lot of INTS which is good but he cant run for squat. EB's return record is safe around him). Abernathy is hurt some what and looked slower Sat. Losing Cam really hurt. That was one side you didn't have to worry about or protect with him. Now, offenses can attack either side and nothing Shoop can do to protect them.

Martin has been a huge disappointment. Coming in the season I thought he'd be a big time player. He was horrible even before Cam got hurt and hasn't improved any. I think coaches have lost confidence in him considering Buchannon plays before him now. Id expect him to leave at end of yr.

Expect a lot of deep balls from bama. Their Wrs vs Tenn DBS is the biggest mismatch on the field.

I think Martinez needs to be replaced. He teaches the same technique he did at Georgia and it just doesn't work. And why hasn't he done something to correct these guys grabbing the jersey?

Butch seems to be more open to upgrading the coaching staff so perhaps in the off season?

Throw DB out in coverage more. Sure impressed me last Saturday.

But seriously, idk why he was lined up on a WR. He did a great job, nonetheless. Heck of a player.

A well thrown fade is the hardest pass to defend, no matter who the CB is. I have seen it at every level, if you can throw a fade you'll have success more than failure.

I just think it has to do with the youth of our secondary.

Our guys are using poor technique, all of them. You simply have to look back for the ball or you're gonna get a flag 95% of the time. Add to that our guys letting everybody blow right past them on the regular and we got ourselves a pretty significant problem that Kiffin has to be licking his chops to see.

Kiffin's receivers are faster than our DB's too!!!

i'm sure coach shoop knows all this. it's the 7th game and he's forced to go with what he's got. surely wasn't ready for Sutton injury. my thoughts are the same as other posters on kiffin. he'll for sure be exploiting this. likely on Bama's 1 st play. i've always felt the defender should get in position to keep the potential receiver in front of him so as not to have to look around at last second. a lot of posting in several threads about this topic lately and i'm sure the whole damn country is aware of it. IMO our DB's are being coached wrong. wouldn't surprise me to see Martinez gone in the near future. GBO!:twocents:

Thrown well, a fade pass is virtually indefensible. On a late play vs TAM, the UT DB had perfect position but would have been beaten if the ball had been thrown just a little shorter.

The only real defense against it is a pass rush.

The best defense against a good fade play is to get to the QB or hurry the throw from the QB as it's about timing. Disrupt that and the ball and receivers are not where they are supposed to be. Other than that, there are techniques DBs are supposed to use where they get their heads and hands involved once the WR makes a play on the ball, they do as well. Our guys are frequently trailing so badly they can't do that AND they need to trust our safeties will actually be there rather than chasing from behind with them.

We need a couple Deon Grant types at safety.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Martinez be replaced after this season. We haven't gotten the most out of our CBs and NBs since he's been here.

He recognized there was no one covering that receiver and he was right.

A former strong safety in HS football, Outside LB in college told me especially on sideline and end zone plays he watched their hands, when he saw their hands start the catch motion he looked/went for the ball.

Kiffin is reading this as we speak and will try and go over the top, all day long Saturday, you can count on it.

Why are a few fans unable to understand that coaches coach and quite often players to not execute as coaches?? There is a difference in teaching and the ability of players to learn. This is most evident in receivers popping footballs when it hits them in their numbers or hands. Why does Malone play like an All American one week and can't catch a football the next game? That is not a coaching problem. That is an execution problem by a player.

Everytime they throw it deep our CB's look slow compared to the recievers. We need some more speed on the outside. Hopefully next year's crop of defensive backs will bring that. Suprised we haven't seen much Osborne and Henderson so far.

Reminds me of the end-zone coverage play Jumper made several weeks ago (was that vs FL?) -- it's almost like no one is reminding the db's of this detail.

Maybe there needs to be some exhaustive clinics on this, today thru Friday.
