Defending Fulmer

I can say it...and will...because I am a Vols fan. Not a Fulmer fan, which is what this thread seems to be centered on. Your original post included.

Those of you, and there are a number of you, who are unable to extract your heads from the extreme south end of Phil Fulmer's torso are stuck in the past...among other places.

I'm a Vol fan. Phil Fulmer has a place in the CFHOF, but it was past time for him to go. My post simply pointed out that we were 3 plays away from an 8-3 regular season, which would have eliminated any shot at the 1st BCS NC. Great coaching?, or great plays?

Maybe both, but it ain't like UT left footprints on every opponent that year, as those of you who still worship "St. Phil" maintain.

I'm a Vol fan. Team over any individual, including the coach.

So...Go Vols.

Ok, We didnt beat teams bad enough, and we were indeed "lucky". Yep, you're just about the biggest Vols fan I've ever seen.

So, using your logic, IF we would have had a kicker Alabama would not have won a NC.

IF Eric Ainge doesnt throw a pick 6 against LSU, they dont win a NC.

IF the pick 6 against Wyoming isnt thrown, what in the hell would you all possibly talk about on here.

IF the referees clearly dont blow a call that Vince Youngs knee isnt down, Texas doesnt win a NC.

IF a phantom pass interference call isnt thrown Ohio St. doenst win a NC.

If Penn State could block Alabama doesnt win the 1979 NC.

I'll buy the Stoener fumble.....well, yeah we caught a BIG break. But Fla, Syracuse, and Miss st. - plain and simple hard fought victories.

They were hard faught, but there was a good bit of luck involved in the UF and Syracuse games.

What was lucky? Clearly PI against Syracuse. Florida, overtime. We made the FG, they didnt.

No luck involved in the trip to Columbia that year was there?

I cant believe it, I cant believe it. Having now to defend our NC year on a Tennessee message board for God's sake. Damn.

I'll stand behind my words. You keep on buying Fulmer memorabilia.

I'm sure the Penn State and Kansas State fans are lining up to bid against you.

Go Vols.

Whenever they confront him with facts that contradict his opinions.

Go Vols.

152-52 is that fact enough for you...
bottom line I don't really care that fulmer was fired, I still waiting for someone better to be hired

That, or he resorts to name calling. Words hurt, ya know.

What about these can't miss evaluations from the 2002 class?

That's a dumb argument. Every class has misses; if they didn't, then you could only recruit 10 players a year, since only 10 players per class can even make the 2-deep and see playing time.

This team's strength is the offense. Fulmer recruited exactly two players on it.

So 3 recruiting classes later, we're still relying on Fulmer's recruits for our defense. What does that say about our recruiting post-Fulmer, if all of Fulmer's players are so terrible?

So, if Fulmer's so awful, when are we going to have a record over any multiple of years better than Fulmer's average record over any multiple of years he coached here?

We've got two freshman linebackers running with the first team defense already. We'll be starting two DTs, two safeties, and two corners that aren't Phil's. We'll probably start Jacques Smith, who would have played at UT for coach Lindsay Lohan, and Marlon Walls. We may have to rely on some of Phil's linebackers, who were a hair better than terrible last year.

It's been two years with 2 head coaches. How do you not realize how stupid this argument is?

I predicted this as Dooley's last year... bold prediction.

That means the answer would be 3 years. The second two year span for the new coach who will finally be the real deal.

Another dumb argument. Luck also cost us plenty of games; without bad luck, we likely go 8-4 in 2008.

It wasn't luck that killed us against UCLA. That was catastrophically bad coaching in all aspects of the game. Not being able to get a yard of offense in the second half against Aubie wasn't really luck either. Wyoming game had some bad luck, but damn, you still have to beat Wyoming.

There's a pretty fine summary of '08. :hi:

the defense was ranked 5th in the nation in '08..offense was the issue

He's a starting DT at Texas Tech; losing him was a failure by Kiffin.

He started less than half the games last season on a team with a defense ranked 114th. He quite possibly will be losing his spot (as a senior) to a sophomore. At UT, he'd fallen far enough down the depth chart to be moved to the OL to try to get him some PT. I'm pretty sure he transferred because his girlfriend died, anyway.
