Yesterday I posted some history about the Vols' football program and posited that we should be embarrassed about where we are.

Some were grateful for the education. Some expressed disdain about my question: Who fires a coach whose record vs. Alabama is 10-5-1?

One fan observed that the post-2004 trajectory of Fulmer's success (failure) warranted the firing. Fair enough. Two losing (no-bowl) seasons in 4 is unacceptable at Tennessee (even with a SEC-E title in '07). Others said UT should have let the coach go after 2005's 5-6 season.

[Should Alabama have fired the Bear after going 6-5 and 6-5-1 in '69 and '70?]

I am pro-DD and my posts reflect it. This kid's got it and is the right guy for the job.

The point of my question (Who fires a coach...?) was not that it wasn't time for Phil to go, but to illustrate the height of this program's expectations. [Apparently, Phil made some so angry that any mention of him sends them off the deep end.]

Ironically, in the end, it is probable that Fulmer was fired not for 2005-2008, but for failing to win more championships when the Vols were winning 119 games in the 12 years from 1993 to 2004. Nasty business this.

Let the spewing commence.

People have terse comments back because people like you, unwise one, can't let go. wtf do you start another thread about the same thing you started a thread about yesterday about a coach who is gone. If you couldn't see the lack of progress on the field, that's not my problem.

Let it go.

When you saw Fulmer's record against Saban, Meyer, Miles, Richt, Tubberville, and Spurrier the case for defending him becomes insane.

Peel the layers off the onion and you'll see a trend. Fulmer had success early in his coaching career against Bama going 6-1-1 out of the gate. Those also happened to be the height of UT football. From '01 on he was 4-4 with 3 of those wins coming against non-winning Bama teams coached by Shula.

I agree he should have been fired but he did bring us a national championship for the first time in close to 50 years. I understand he left our program pretty bad off but come on guys.

How is that ironic, or even novel? That's been stated about 10,000 times. He racked up plenty of wins but way more often than not fell short against championship-caliber teams. Once the league loaded up on coaches capable of producing such quality, Phil's results were pedestrian.

Had he won more championships he could have survived the crapfest of the last four years, but we certainly wouldn't be better off long term had that happened.

Yes he did. I see you are graduating in a couple of years. PF won win you were @ 6 yrs old, I'm guessing.
Now do you understand why the PF talk needs to stop? You were in kindergarten when UT last won a championship of any sort.

Before 98 it was 47 years since we won a title. I just cant see how you can hate so much on a man who won a National Championship. I also agreed he needed to go im not defending he didnt. Just stating he did win a title and was not this awful coach many of you try to make he out to be.

But go on with with making fun of people who thought he was a pretty good coach.

Imo, it's more of the hate for people that keep bringing up the past and don't have any idea what was happening on the football field the last few years, than it is of PF. The derogatory comments towards PF are almost a side effect of the aggravating posts, but objectivity/reality of a situation doesn't make you a hater. I have seldom heard anyone bash PF about the championship. You are in school. You will find out very soon that this is a world of today and tomorrow, not yesterday, and definitely not 13 years ago, especially in the world of sports and business.
I look forward to the days when the PF apologists shutup, and he can come back to TN the right way in a few years once the sinking ship is righted.

So what's the excuse then for the decade without a conference title? Why was the talent level so bad in 2009? Why was a team loaded with seniors so unbelievably horrible in 2008? He either was coaching very badly or not trying very hard. Either way, time to go.

Again I never said he shouldnt have been fired. When did i ever say he was a great coach after the title??

There you making fun of someone who actually said he should have been fired. Im not one of the people who think he should still be here today

Actually it was directed at the ones who keep wishing he was still infesting the football program and that think he is the only reason we won th NC in 1998.

I miss Fulmer the recruiter. When he sat down on the couch and turned on the charm, it was OVER! He's a fantastic salesman.

Fair enough. The people that think he should still be here dont know anything. I havent seen any say he should still be here though.

Hopefully this debate will finally end after a big upset win over UF in Gainsville and TN starts 3-0. Then everyone can see CDD is the man for the furture of this program, and will forget about the tired debates of the past.
