True, but I think folks might be getting out over their skis on this one. As a return man, he's already "in space". To get him there in the context of an offense where DBs are playing him one on one, is a bit different. Not saying this staff won't scheme ways to do it, but as a defense, one would be looking for #3 to appear on the field and unless he's a regular on offense, you'd have to imagine they'll have a clue that something is up. Having said that, we didn't seem to bat an eye when Legette appeared on the punt team so maybe these coaches just aren't that smart/observant? Hope Dee can provide a spark, but it's hard to imagine that he'll be proficient as a WR and know the offense well enough in 2 weeks to be much more than a decoy or perhaps a jet sweep or WR screen player come the aTm game. We really need Thornton healthy and dialed in sooner rather than later. Or we need Webb and Nimrod to grow up very, very quickly. I see one or both of those guys having a greater impact than Dee. Personally, I'm wondering if this isn't just a red herring designed to get the attention of our opponents? As guarded as this staff is with everything, With the Bru injury and talk about who helps make up for his loss, I find it a little too convenient that something like this hits the social media platforms. If nothing else, it will give opponents something to prepare for I guess.
I don't think he'll be #2 at WR or anything. He'll be a wrinkle that opposing defenses have to account for. His speed makes it to where you have to defend him and helps to create the matchup problems that our offense looks for. It's never a bad thing to stick another guy who runs a 4.4 out there. Especially one that is known to be shifty on kick returns. I don't think Tennessee is reinventing the wheel at WR here. Just adding another weapon to the arsenal.

Hope he can block downfield. Losing McCoy hurts the screen game.
Switching mid-season like this, I don't know that we can expect much of that or a whole lot of variety from him. I'd think his he'd be in there for a Go route, a screen or two, and maybe a jet/rocket/orbit sweep . . . things where he ends up with the ball in space running around basically like it's a kick return. He's got value just going straight down the field drawing a Safety. But who knows? There's a reason stuff like this happens during a bye week.

Just a reminder to the enthusiastic and imaginative that Dee comes in initially to fill the bottom spot on the WR depth chart. Every true freshman is months ahead of him in knowledge and preparation.

He will have to learn the plays, the routes, the blocking assignments, the reads, the offensive calls, the signals from the sidelines--everything--and it may all be totally new to him.

Yes, I guess it's possible they could put Dee out on the field to receive a WR screen and see what he could do with that. But what if the defense switches, making that play, that route, the wrong call? What then? Will he know his assignment in the play Milton switches to? Do you waste a time-out to get him out of there? And even if he successfully runs one play, there will still have to be a substitution for him, which allows the defense to also substitute. Maybe it's worth it. Maybe not.

These are all considerations that have to be made before putting Dee (and his incredible talent) on the field at WR. He has a lot to learn, and I feel sure the hope is that he could be ready to play if absolutely necessary in 3-4 weeks. But we need to understand that he has been moved there initially as insurance against losing 3 more WRs to injury before this season ends.

As another way to inform and manage our expectations, consider that Iamaleava joined the team in time to participate in Orange Bowl practices. Would you have expected him to play QB in the Orange Bowl?
Or they could just teach him a play or two

Yeah. They're missing splash plays this year. If he gave you a couple here and there it would be considered success. They need another big body that can block worse though for what this offense is this year..

Our offense doesn’t do “packages”. We aren’t going to run him in for a play then sub him out. We don’t sub. It’s just not how our offense works. I’d love to see it cause Dee is incredible with the ball in this hands but I just don’t think we’re gonna see him contribute on offense. It’s just not how our offense works imo
That's the part that makes me wonder how much we really see him out there. It's a big ask to switch a guy to receiver mid-season in a hurry up style offense with a bunch of read routes.

Dude is a burner. Can't be bad to get the ball in his hands a few more times a game.
It was a joke watching SC try to tackle him on the TD punt return that got called back! Shiftiness of Anthony Miller...am sure there's other better examples.

I could see him getting in the rotation since McCoy is out and Thornton is banged up. Depth is an issue at just about every position on this year's squad, WR is no exception.

He'd at least be a good decoy. DC on opposing team would be surprised and throw another couple of guys over on that side of the field. Might be able to get away with that at least once.

Biggest question is can he catch? He has to have decent hands to be a punt returner, but even our best receivers struggle to catch Milton's passes at times. Might take him a while to get used to it. Bye week is a great time to make the move...

It would definitely be great to have Dee's speed to contribute to the offense but I don't think I've read that they've ever had him practice with the offense? Also, don't the coaches usually have the same guys out there due to the tempo? They don't seem to rotate much from what I recall and that would seem to be a pretty big change for a player who hasn't been in there on that side of the ball (from what I understand anyway...).

i think we could also maybe work Sampson in some more... maybe even as a receiver on quick slants, etc. he can make anything happen when he gets the ball

Even with Hyatt’s speed and Squirrel’s quickness, we haven’t had a receiver with that strange, almost intangible elusive quality since Velus. He would get the ball in the open and it was as if he projected a forcefield that warded tacklers away. Dee has some of that.

Makes a lot of sense. With Thornton injured and possibly moving outside when he returns, we don’t really have another true slot option (Nimrod has played some there). And who else would you want to see catch a quick screen on this team?
Am I the only one who is so immature that I snicker every time I hear the name Nimrod? I just have to mentally switch to thinking of the reference in the Bible to Nimrod where he's a might hunter.
