What pissed me off about that game was they went for the same fade route in the endzone corner to KW 2 or 3 times in a row. And how the def never adjusted to the back QB for LSU!!

After the Cotton Bowl to end the '04 season, I honestly thought that we could win a national championship in 2005.

One of the most painful memories I have of being a Tenn fan. It still hurts ten years later.

With healthy Ainge, I thought so too. Actually, I basically knew they'd at least win the SEC. The SEC was down that year (last time SEC didn't win a title actually).

But hey, apparently Rick Clausen did well enough to keep his job :crazy:

Also, everybody forgets this, but when Fulmer pulled Ainge for Clausen after Erik led them to 10 points in two drives, it was like "Uh-oh, this could be bad."

I was at the game, sitting in the opposite end zone of the LSU band. The Vols had Davey in check, but when he went down with an injury and Mauck entered the game it changed the dynamic (if that's even the word) of the LSU offense. It actually toned their offense down into a more vanilla offense, but the Vols D never adjusted and Mauck moved the ball up and down the field at will against us.

LSU was running a very small amount of plays with Mauck and you could pretty much guess the play as they approached the line of scrimmage yet we could not stop a mediocre offense ,at best, that day in the second half. With the LSU band blaring happily in my face after every offensive play, it was truly demoralizing.

Also, if I'm not mistaken, besides Fulmer passing out roses on the plane back from Gainesiville, the following week he, John Henderson, and Travis Stephens spent 2 days in Orlando being finalists for some awards.

I had a bad bad feeling then because it was during practice week for the game.

Fulmer had some really good wins but he has also crapped the bed, Dooley vs UK style, in this game.

We were also picked fairly high to start the 2002 season as well but the genius coaching of Ron Zook took that down quick.

Really can't compare the two losses. One was to a ranked LSU team in the SEC Championship Game and the other was to freaking KY.

Yeah the week before I was at flordia ut sidelines first row was on a high like no other when we beat them and then I go to atlanta the following week to get cussed out by some 60 year old woman because they wooled our arse have had a deep hate for lsu ever since

I agree! It does not take much when an unproved QB comes in and you stack the line and say if you are going to beat us your going to do it throwing! After a couple good runs by Matt, their QB, I would have put 8 in the box and dared them to throw it, which obviously they could not.

But NO, we play defensively straight up and make NO changes when what's his name got knocked out of the game.

I will never understand that game and what the Coaching Staff was thinking. That game cost us a WHOLE lot!!!!!

I was at this game. My first wife left me the next August.

Losing this game bothers me more now.

Fulmer had two careers at UT. The one where he was hungry and the one where he was entitled and complacent. The problems didn't start with the LSU game but that was a watershed event.

95-19... that was Fulmer's career record the night he lost that game.

He was a very pedestrian 57-32 after that. Over half of his losses came in the last 6 years of his 17 years run.

Worse yet, UT had ceased to be competitive with the top tier of the SEC and most of it related to coaching and program discipline.

In 2005 Fulmer went 5-6, In 2006 Fulmer went 9-4, In 2007 Fulmer went 10-4, In 2008 Fulmer went 5-7

The 2006-2007 seasons jump in wins happen to be the same years when his old buddy Cutcliffe returned to bail Failmer out

Without Cut being back those 2 years the pedestrian coach would have been run over like a freight train
