Debord

One has been a successful hc the other has not

I agree with you about the scoring....and we did score more points than Appy to win...and we DID BEAT THEM...BUT....

Appy State: 43 rushes for 184 yards...they kept the ball away from us...TOP: 33.5 minutes...they outplayed us on Special teams....

But--they were able to move the ball up and down the field on our defense as Appy State!!!! They completed the necessary passes when they had to get that done...

they had guys open everywhere....

And, if they didn't have a true freshman kicking in his first FB game ever--we just might have lost....

They left 4 points on the field, and pathetic game management might have cost them another FG attempt...

And our D couldn't stop them in the 4th QTR at the end of the game to get the ball back with enough time to give our offense another chance for a winning drive....

PLENTY of defensive gaffs in that game that will need to be fixed....and can be fixed....

And Appy State is NO-WHERE near ANY team in the SEC...on a week to week basis...

So, all I was saying is that our Defense has some very real problems that need to be ironed out before we play Florida!!! If you can't see that...then well....

Clemson last season in their playoff run gave up 10 points to App State. Yes there are always areas for improvement defensively, we have them after the App State game no doubt and I suspect Shoop will close those gaps in comparison to Jancek last year who either did not or could not. But the sky is falling knee clacking beshatting oneself in public over our defense is not worthy of anyone who has played or understands football IMO. Take guess where you are on the Remy scale?

There was an opinion floating around last year that we would have won the OU and Florida games last year if the players made plays on the defensive side of the ball late in games. That was true but the counter opinion was Debord could not call plays.
The Defense gave Debord 4 quarters to tie the game or take the lead by keeping the score close. Finally late in the game Debord reaches deep into his bag of plays and calls something so secret the likes of college football would change forever. A deep pass to a WR with man-to-man coverage on the outside. This true innovation has lead to fear for our opponents and caused Bama to add another coach for their offense in hopes of copying this play. Bud Foster has been quoted as saying "what will he come up with next?".

This is a very average coaching staff on the offensive side of the ball. It is quite embarrassing. Other than Sal, Coach fishen' buddy might be the worst coordinator in the Tennessee modern era.

I would've loved to have Lincoln Riley or Major Applewhite, both running wide open spread offense with zone read, lots of creativity in those 2 offenses

Its why football is a team sport and not just coaching or playing. The whole team has to be on the same page and must play well to succeed. Especially in the SEC.

Yep. IMO, the VT gane will tell us how good/bad we will be and if Butch is the coach for the future.

I know it is only one game but.. Personally, if we lose I don't think he's the man. If he squeaks by I don't know. If he wins big I'll feel muchhh better.

I think I've heard that line of thinking many times before. How many times can we say that before we mean it? Honest question

I also heard a stat on the radio today saying that the Vols averaged 1.5 yards per play on first down. Wow! Talk about atrocious

Win big for me would have to be outback bowl type win, anything close tells me all I need to know about our staff. We should be firing on all cylinders this season, no excuses

So what's it take for VOLS win and to determine if Butch is the future?

First I am in no way an expert in anything regarding to football. But I think its going to take a fairly dominating win. Because a dominating win will show a couple of things. It will show that this team is hungry and realized it played poorly and is ready to make that transition to playing like a championship level team. It would also show that Butch has the ability to recognize his mistakes and is able to correct them.
