DeBord plotting 2nd-year wrinkles for Vols' offense

No secrets revealed here, unfortunately:

The most obvious aspect on offense Tennessee can improve is the passing game, which struggled a season ago with consistency and efficiency, and the Vols made improving the rhythm and chemistry of that dimension a point of emphasis throughout the offseason.

"We're getting better at it each day," tight end Jason Croom said after Saturday's practice. "We're trying to figure out what we need to work on. We don't really try to focus on the good stuff. We're trying to focus on what we need to correct."

As for DeBord's secret wrinkles, the coordinator certainly has plenty of options to throw at opposing defenses.

Running back Alvin Kamara could see his role expend and evolve. Croom can present mismatch problems — too big for defensive backs and fast enough to outrun linebackers — and could be targeted plenty on play-action passes to underneath routes and in the flat. Might the Vols expand the under-center package they used successfully in the Outback Bowl?

I'll believe it when I see it. I was happy to see them introduce play action against Northwestern, but they were the worst executed PA I've ever seen.

You must have only watched NFL Films on play action then. For it to have been introduced during bowl practices, I thought it was very efficient. It'll be great mixed with the spread this year. :good!:

I was all for DeBord throwing the ball against a poor Arkansas secondary. It backfired, and I could see DeBord was still learning his new team and quite frankly being a playcaller again.
I think hes a smart guy. May not be the best, but Dobbs did improve as an overall QB and leader and the OL was great. Hard to tell if the conservative run run run approach on your last drive needing a 3rd down is on him or Butch.
If I'm not mistaken, they also said late in camp and early in the season they were still keeping the playbook limited as the players weren't quite grasping everything and running with it. UT could run well and so they stuck with it.
I've had issues with 2nd half adjustments like everyone else, but seriously, if you're really just one deminsional and can't throw the ball and expand your gameplan, is it a surprise other defenses did better against them in the 2nd half?
Bottom line is if PWilly Malone and Croom indeed play like we all know they can, with ole reliable Smith and Wolf also being in the mix, Dobbs doesn't have to be perfect and this offense will explode to top 10, and I believe they will. DeBord will look amazingamazing if so

3rd quarter of Battle at Bristol, UT up by 24. UT lines up at the 2 yard line going into score with Kongbo at FB, Kamara behind him. Dobbs is under center. Dobbs drops into the gun and the backs split to either side. Dobbs then goes in motion to the left sending the LBs into a panic. The snap goes to Kamara. He fakes into the line, steps back and hits Kongbo who slipped into the corner of the endzone with the jump pass for the TD.

Don't take the attitude "outside every silver lining is a dark cloud".. Going from 2 yards to 4 yards is a 100% improvement. However, I expect some real down the field passes.

Wow....No....Watch UGA, BAMA, FLA, Pretty much anyone that runs a heavy running offense...You see A TON of Play Action. Heck...We "technically" run play action when Dobbs fakes the hand off to Hurd or Kamara, and passes the ball...

I can see plays where both our WRs head deep clearing the middle for our faster TEs being chased by LBs for easy money. The safeties have to defend those deep zones, the minute you make money with it and safeties cheat up, it's our WRs 1 on 1, they gotta get it.

Get the ball to Kamara - Screens, Slot WR, Direct Snap etc... He is similar to Cordarelle Patterson in his ability to take it to the house every time he touches it
