It sounds like you are a sheep. Probably one of the folks defending CDD by saying "The coaches only call the plays...they aren't on the field making plays" or one of the guys defended CCM by saying "he's a stand up guy" or a Hamilton apologist saying "but he adopted almost as many kids as Brangalina"
Just because I am not the Athletic director does not mean I am precluded from having an opinion and just because my opinion isn't one of roses and puppies doesn't mean I am not a "real fan."
We have to take the medicine but we sure as heck don't have to like it.
And even moreso don't have to listen to some pompous know it all lecture us. I've donee my time and earned my stripes !
He is one of the originators of the spread offense which can easily be melted into read option.
He is a great proven recruiter
He is actively coaching
He is an active oc
He is actively attaining success
Oh and he had a top 15 offense at Berkeley last year with inferior players to ours.
Any other questions?!
On the recruiting trail, YES.
On the field...NO.
He's 12 & 13 in two seasons. Jury is still out, but returns thus far don't demand worship of the guy. All the more reason not to halt the momentum the recruiting has generated, with a hiring of a crony who doesn't even FIT....something Butch said was paramount for him.
Newsflash. DeBord is the WORST fit Butch could have sought. DeBoring ran a pro-style, ball-control...eat time off the clock, offense. Conversely, Butch runs a fast-paced, zone read offense...designed to run more and more offensive plays. Not less. It's designed to go go fast to wear teams down, rather than trying to keep the opponents offense off the field as long as possible. His offensive philosophy/concepts run completely counter to DeBord's.
So, with that being the case, what's all this BS about FIT? DeBord is NOT a good fit. Can he ADAPT/CHANGE?....maybe. But if that is what we are talking about, then it has NOTHING to do with....FIT.
It's more about past coaching relationships. The whole FIT routine was just a line of BS, as was this spurious coaching search. He never conducted any damn search. He called his bud up, had him in for a few days and hired him on the spot.
Notice in the NSD celebration last night...Butch caught himself saying they would try to HIRE by the end of the week. Before the word HIRE got completely out of his mouth....he paused and stated....ANNOUNCE.
He knows this whole search was a ruse. I like Butch in many regards, but I'm not going to kneel down, lick his boots and worship the guy like some of the sheep here, do.
Butch Jones is a spread guy. Given his background and who he has worked for in the past, he really didn't have a say in the matter. In his last two jobs before coming to UC he was the OC at Central Michigan during Brian Kelly's first year firing up the Chips then he moved on to be the WR coach at West Virginia during the heart of the Pat White/Steve Slaton era. So in the three years prior to him taking the head coaching position at Central he worked under two of the foremost authorities, or at the very least two of the earliest adapters of spread offensive Football. But there is still more to his coaching background then his work with BK and Rich Rod.
The most time that Jones spent working for a head coach was the four years he spent under Mike DeBoard. Deboard's teams in Mount Pleasant were not very successful, he never posted more than four wins in a season and he won a total of 12 games in 4 years. But the importance of DeBoard in the formation of Jones's offense has more to do with DeBoards background. DeBoard worked on the offensive side of the ball for the Wolverines for 7 years. When DeBoard took the Central job he brought that Michigan offense along with him. The reason that this is important when it comes to Jones is simple. This was the longest period of time he spent with a scheme as an assistant/coordinator. So while Jones did his work with Kelly and Rich Rod he adopted many things from those coaches, the formations, the personnel groupings, run schemes ect he still had those Michigan roots, particularly in the development of his passing game.
The end product then is sort of an amalgamation of two ideologies. The basic conception of the offense is that it is the old spread and shred from the Rich Rod heyday on the ground married to the more staid and conservative west coast passing attack that comes from the Michigan influence that has pervaded Jones time as an assistant. On the surface that is OK, but there is an inherent problem that comes with these sort of amalgamated offenses, but I won't touch on that until I hit part three tomorrow. For now lets get down with some specifics of what this all means.

Give this a watch^. DeBord went to Carr after they learned their bowl opponent and he told him that he knew how to attack them in space if Lloyd would let him. He changed to this offence in less than a month. Give him an entire off-season AND a squad of players that actually fit this offence, and let's see what he can do.
Done my time and earned my stripes also. If my "pomposity" offends you, take the option you have earned, don't read it. See that ignore button, use it.
Thanks. It's time to quit whining and get behind him and Butch. We know he has coached at a high level in D1 and with Tight Ends in the Pros. We don't know the circumstances that led him to be an administrator for the last few years. I hope he grooms Azzani and keeps him on staff and they hire a top notch QB coach.

Once you get to know a little bit more about tony ( I know his history very well)- mumme and dykes were most instrumental in the develiopment, Tony was then brought into the fold studying byu's template and expanded upon it. Mike leach then joined them and further advance it into what is now known as the air raid offense you alluded to.Hard to get past point #1.
Tiger Ellison.
Mouse Davis.
Hal Mumme.
June Jones.
Air Raid.
Blackballed.
