During the pressor he was asked how hands on he will be with the QBs:

"That's a great question. I was very hands on. I knew everything the quarterbacks were doing, just like here I will know what every linemen is doing, right now in our skill development period. Our wide receivers, our backs, our tight ends. I will know everything that they will be doing technique wise and drill wise. And the same thing was true when I was coordinating the offense, I knew everything about that quarterback. I knew everything about his drop, I knew everything about his progression, I knew everything about his drill work. And then I met with them and I would go over throughout the week different situations like first and second down. I would sit down with that quarterback at that time and I would say, you know, "here's the coverages we are anticipating," which they knew, the percentages and all that. You know, we would go through every pass and say "what do you like? Is there anything you don't like?" If a quarterback doesn't like it, we are not going to do it, we are not going to force the issue. I have never done that, we are going to do what the quarterback feels comfortable doing in the throw game."

Debord also went on to say that he studied QB coaching with Holmgren and Martz. Debord's resume include coaching up Henne, Griese, Henson, and...Brady. Let's give our coach a shot. He has won a national championship and he has had several O-linemen in the league.

I'm stoked

I agree. There's no reason at all not to welcome him to big orange country and sit back and enjoy the ride. He seemed stoked to be a vol and came across as a knowledgeable offensive guy. I'm cool with him.

While I was concerned initially about DeBord being out of football for several years, it is clear that he was still plugged into the game. He is a football junkie!!! Obviously he missed coaching because he would go to UM practices, watch, and just be a part of what was going on. He is a student of the game. He has worked under some of the game's best minds. One thing that is sometimes overlooked about this hire is his experience running and managing a staff. Like any new piece to the puzzle, he will bring in new ideas and energy. He will make the position coaches better and they will make him better. That's what good managers do. Can't wait to see how long it takes for his influence to show results.

Agreed,

If you are to believe his words in the press conference it sounds like he has never stopped studying the game. He sounds obsessive and very detail oriented. Could bode well for us.

Here is part of an article from today's (2-14-15) Chattanooga TFP:

Part of his interview, in fact, included a meeting with Dobbs.

"I think he's a great person," DeBord said. "I've watched a lot of film on him, and when I came in to interview -- I think this was smart on Butch's part -- but I actually was able to sit down with him and talk to him. I found out right away how much passion he has for football."

DeBord said he's already noticed some strides Dobbs has made on some smaller details the two have discussed.

"I could not believe, just in our skill development period on Wednesday, how much he's improved, with his stance, with his drop, with his footwork -- all those things," DeBord said.

"We don't have a ball out there, so we can't throw a ball, but we're holding a cone and going through the drops and all that stuff. Just the improvement he's made shows me his passion for football and wanting to be a great player. I'm really excited about working with him."

DeBord may be adjusting to new players and a new situation, but parts of the offense he's diving into are hardly new.

"It's like riding a bike," he said. "You get back on it and start pedaling. Right now I'm pedaling pretty fast."

I think he will excel as an OC here. So much so that it may cost us coach ZA in a year or 2 when he realizes Debord isnt going anywhere. He may well be here as long as CBJ is here. Look for an extension for CBJ when we win the east. May be this season or next. We will win it though. Soon.very soon. (Gif time)

I wouldn't worry much about ZA leaving. Elder is our future at OC as he's coached many positions.

It could be a good thing that he has been out of coaching for a while. He has had time to recharge the batteries and to relocate the passion that comes with college ball, especially SEC ball.

Good to see a positive thread. If only the negavols will chill and stay away true fans can enjoy the possibilities without idiotic comments.

Yeah, I think we're safe with the current coaching talent as long as there are bigger challenges in front of us that seem attainable in the next year or two.

Everyone wants to be part of what's happening here. And it could be happening for the next 3-4 years easy.

Challenging for SEC East this year, maybe even getting to the SEC Champ game....

Going for it all with an SEC Championship and trip to the "New Years' Six" the following year...

Swinging for the whole enchilada the year after that, sights firmly set on a national championship run...

It could take four years rather than three ... there could be set-backs that lengthen the timeline a year or two ...

But as long as there's a mountain to climb, and it looks like they may get to climb it soon, all our talented coaching staff will stay for it.

Then, of course, naturally and you can't blame them, several will jump at well-earned opportunities to be head coaches or coordinators themselves. With success comes opportunity. They know it, and in fact it's another reason they're sticking around.

And life will go on even after CBJ's acolytes spread like seeds blown in the wind, because Butch will hire new talent and we'll be off on another run for riches. :)

I know he's not young and flashy like some wanted, but the man does know football.

I think this year CBJ system will be tested and evaluated. Coach Debord is another pair of eyes and ears in CBJ system. It should be very helpful. I like the old fella. I liked what he said about being happy. Not to many folks can say that about there job.
I'm all in with this crew. I want my VOLs of old back kicking butt. No mercy smoke em all.

I'm looking forward to the "Eating Crow: Coach Debord" thread. We are heading in the right direction.

Just bump this one...potential great flashbacks if this hire works out. :)

Debord didn't have that much to do with developing Brady. That would go to Tom Martinez. Brady congratulated the Debord hire and praised him because Brady is a nice guy. Are we supposed to be impressed with the fact that he helped develop Henne and Griese? Sheesh.

If Butch is on his game, he will make DeBord read VN football forum... poor guy does not know what he is getting into.
