Debate the hiring of Lane Kiffin here (Merged)

I’m going to get slammed for this, but so be it. I love this program as much as anyone, so I’ll voice my $.02 as does the next guy. What surprises me most about many of the characters on this board is that if you take a position opposite the majority, you’re either a “fulmerite”, “negavol”, or whatever. I’m not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, I just think some things are so obvious it’s extremely difficult to sit back and let it go.

Phil is history. We can all agree on that.

But what we don’t agree on is Kiffin and his ability to take us to the next level. Watching the presser confirmed what I believed all along……..this guy doesn’t have a clue what he just stepped into. He literally looked like a “deer in the headlights”, and even his attempt to connect with the Faithful seemed forced. I’m sure to him this is the “Job of all Jobs” and rightly so. But without coaching a game, it is so apparent that he is way, way, way out of his league.

Miss St. might have been a better fit for him. At a place where just making it to a bowl game is enough, Kiffin might have fit right in. At a place where it is understood that you’re probably never going to make it to the SEC Championship Game and it is definite that you’re never going to win it, Kiffin could have found a place to grow. Instead, he has landed at a place where, no matter what you all are saying now, if you don’t beat UF in 3 years, you’re a goner.

I wish the man luck. I want him to succeed. I think we have the support, facilities, and players to succeed. I just don’t think we have the right coach.

I hope I’m wrong. But believe it or not, it won’t take 3 yrs to find out. At this time next year, everyone will be a believer….one way or the other.

That's asinine. No one can be expected to rebuild a program like UT in one year. I don't know what press conference you watched but the guy I saw was genuine and convincing. I think we'll be back among the elite within 3-5 years.

Let's not cast the first judgment until after signing day, when we have something to judge.

Then, let's wait until spring practice and the O&W game.

Finally, wait until we play our first game, and see how we compete against the UF's & Bama's of the land.

I'm not giving him one year.....my point is that we'll know one way or another by this time next yr whether he does have the ability (or potential) to pull this off.

I've said this, to you, before. I'll stand behind it.

Be here, this time, next year, to crow or eat it.

I'll be waiting. Don't change your nic. Whoever "OrangeSquare" is, or was, he lost a 12-pack to me, and was never man enough to show up, and pay up.

Man up. Show up. One of us will pay up.

Go Vols.

So if Jessica Alba came up to you and asked you to "take her" right there, do you think you would act a bit nervous at first? When you acted a bit nervous should she equate that with your "performance" or should she say that you would have been better talking to Trudy from Facts of Life.

LOL...I thought this was going to be about Crompton when I saw the title. There was a picture of Crompton compared to a deer in headlights posted somewhere here at the beginning of the season.

Wow, I had a much different opinion of him after the press conference. I thought he knew exactly what he was doing.
My sentiments exactly he looked almost guided the whole time. He stumbled and sputtered and didn't exude confidence whatsoever. I hope he knows what he has stepped in....the didn't care in Oakland but best believe we do at UT.

Fulmer was a fraud and if it had not been for Cutcliffe he would have been gone years ago. With Cutcliffe Fulmer went 82-19 in 8 years, without Cutcliffe Fulmer went 66-33. Sorry to rain on your Fulmer Parade but your pathetic with your nonsense. And just to let you know about Kiffin and lack of experience and being in over his head....newsflash Bullwinkle...General Robert Neyland was hired at the tender age of 34 with no head coaching experience, in the history books as the winningest coach at UT. Here is another one...Doug Dickey no HC experience hired at the age of 32 by UT and it was Dickey who placed the T on the helmets and had the band form the T start of the games.

Having come from USC and being hired as an NFL HC, I can see where you'd think he doesn't understand big time football and high expectations. He probably thinks this is just about tailgates and the Vol Navy.

But you don't get it. This isn't Los Angeles, California or the NFL this is Knoxville, Tn.

He's in way over his head.

Sarcasm button on.

I hope that you are wrong. I also applaud you on the quality of this post. It is well thought out, well written, and obviously being presented as your opinion (much different than the tone that has lead to some heated exchanges).

My compliments. :hi:

Thanks voldad. Even though we may differ when we're at a fork in the road, at the end of the day we're all on the same team.

This is my take on Kiffin.

He'll do great things here or he'll work himself to death trying.

he didnt seem like a deer in the headlights to me, either. he seemed like a man that appreciates the offer given to him and is ready to get down to business. i guess that is what endears me to him most, is to see how genuinely excited he is to be at UT. it really made me think Butch Who? Jon Who? i didnt quite feel that way, before the press conference.

I think we could all agree that the environment is a little bit different from when RN was around. With schollies limited and everyone on a more equal footing, there is much less room for error these days.

I see your analogy, but it does make me want to vomit a little.

Especially when they started taking pictures.

He said "My wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant" before she told him to smile

He looked like he was really uncomfortable with the picture taking. Not that I blame him, I hate it too.

They should take more pics of his wife...

How many more of these pointless arguments are you going to write before you actually see him coach 5150?

Why do I feel like the the numbers 5-15 are going to be coming up soon?

The thread creator is a Kool-Aid drinking Al Davis supporter and certified Lane Kiffin hater.
He's one of those uninformed and uneducated Raider fans that don't know anything about Al Davis and his lies.
I know because I'm an informed and educated Raider fan and I'm also a USC alum.
The Vols are now my 2nd favorite college team thanks to Kiffin who is anything but a deer in headlights.

When it was rumored on here that Brian Kelly was going to get the job, some people were saying..."who?" After that someone made a post that said "Hamilton doesnt need to worry about winning the press conference." Well, with Kiffin he won the press conference...at least with most people. I just hope its not the only big win he brings us.
