Dear Mr. Manning ...

Here is a short story that I think gives some insight into why the Manning sons are the type of people that they are. The point of this story is like father, like son.

As a high school senior, my hometown played Archie Manning’s hometown (Drew, MS) in the North Mississippi baseball championship on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford where he was headed as a star football recruit. I was on first base when my coach gave me the steal sign so I took off on the pitcher’s delivery to the plate. Archie played shortstop so he moved in to take the catcher’s throw at second base. It was a very close play that could have gone either way but the ump called me safe. As the dust was clearing, Archie reached out and gave me his right hand. He lifted me out of the dirt to my feet. He then proceeded to walk around behind me and dust off the back of my jersey and the seat of my pants with his glove before retaking his position at shortstop.

He never said a word. I never forgot.

....and btw, IF you'd consider being our QB coach, well.........

Tennessee would recruit much differently....

Top recruits would have to apply to the University and the Football Team....

And sit home and wait for acceptance letters from both

The man loves UT. I hope he can finish out this year with the Broncos on a high note and then retire. To be candid, he has not been good in the last 12 games or so for Broncos--roughly last six of last year plus first six of this year. Not good against Indy last year in the playoffs, and though the Broncos are undefeated this year, it has been a struggle for PM and the Denver offense. He has thrown a /lot/ of interceptions. He doesn't have the talent on offense he had two years ago--but PM is the issue, too.

In any case, he's had an absolutely amazing career--even if he wasn't able to win the Heisman, which had to have been a disappointment to a traditionalist like him (our futility against florida goes WAY back), and even if the pundits ding him for having won only one super bowl. And he's been an incredible rep for pro football and the Vols. I for one am glad that he got out of Indy before ending his pro career and got to play in more of a big-time city with more of a big-time football reputation.
