This is an open letter to Chad Cunningham.

Dear Chad,

First, let me say, I appreciate your efforts as our punter and long-range back-up place kicker this year. You seem like a nice guy.

Second, I hope you are recovering well from those late hits in the back dished out by UK two weeks ago. Those were dirty.

Finally, if, in the Chick-Fil-A bowl, you take as long to get your punt off as you have all year long, Virginia Tech special teams will eat you alive. Stated differently, they will block your punt over and over again. And they will probably score. Trust me on this one. You need to be in a hurry if, and when, you are called upon to punt.

It is called BeamerBall for a reason.

As of Sept 2009, Beamerball has produced 79 defensive touchdowns and 18 touchdowns off blocked kicks in 22 years under Beamer. I don't know the numbers for this year, but they have added to these totals during the 2009 season.

I am not trying to be a jerk. I only want the best for you and the Vols. I "hate" VT and do not want to see them block your punt.

Yours truly,

Big Orange Fan

Very true! He has been a slow looking punter but in reality seems to be at a OK speed. But VT is going to be coming after every kick!

Go VOLS!

Oh so true, some of the worst special teams in the country going up against some of the best.

I'm glad that I am not the only one that notices how long it takes for him to get his punts off. The only reason why we haven't had a ton of blocks this year is because teams, for some reason, have had on punt safe/punt return. You are right ,if he takes his 3.5 steps before he gets it downfield, it's going to be a long day.

Rugby kick might be a option to get it off quicker

Why? That takes even longer to get the kick off, and VT can pin their ears back and go right after him if he does the rugby kick. There is no penalty for hitting a kicker when he does a rugby kick.

I would bet a lot of people don't know the rule was changed. But the kicker has to be out of the tackle box(5 yds), right?

You are correct Slobberknocker. If the kicker goes outside of the tackle box there is no running into or roughing the kicker penalty. If he stays inside the tackle box he is granted kicker protection.

This is so true, they wont block the kick. They will intercept it before he gets his foot on the ball. I have counted up to 4 seconds before the kick is off.:snoring:

I take it you are referring to the same coaching staff that has apparently done nothing thus far this season to get the message across to CC that he is the slowwwwest punter in America?

Someone needs to clue him in on the massacre that is getting ready to take place at his feet.

Mark it down. The best punters in college football have trouble with VT special teams.

Cunningham will look like a wounded baby wildebeest on Wild Kingdom to the fast approaching VT punt blockers.
