You must have never had stat in college. Mediocre is .500. The records you quoted would be called above average.

Going .500 might be mediocre to anyone with a loser mentality. But 8-4 or 9-3 type records and going to 2nd and 3rd rate crappy bowl games is mediocre to me. Consistently winning 10 games or more, being in the Top 15 regularly, and competing for SEC championships and the College Football playoff should be the standard for Tennessee. Anything less (on the average) is unacceptable and calls for change. We should never ever settle for less and accept mediocrity as a fan base. We as fans should continually put pressure on the decision makers (large boosters and administrators)to hire people that will meet the standard.

Nice, he can easily put another 10lbs of good weight on that frame when Rock gets him in the weight room...

Butch has an eye for talent. He signed a 2* offensive lineman @ Western Michigan who made all American & was a first rounder in the NFL.

I think coaching, not star ratings is what determines how good a team will be. What were the star ratings for Washington, Colorado, VA Tech, Houston, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Boise St., Utah, San Diego St., Oklahoma St., teams that were ranked.

For example, Preston Williams was a 5* WR in Georgia...in Florida or Cal he may have been only a 3*. Same with Hurd...

I agree with you on the coaching aspect of the game 110%. But to say that a 5 star GA kid would be ranked lower in CA and FL IMO is crazy! Lol. I would match the High school talent in GA against any state every year. I looked up the stats starting in 08 to previous, and 247 & Athlon had it at

1 FL
2 TX
3 CA
4 GA
5 OH

As far as numbers go, the drop off from 1-5 isnt that big at all.

No mediocre at Tennessee is 8-4. We shouldnt be all excited at 8-4. You think Bama, Michigan, OSU, FSU, Clemson, LSU and other powerhouse schools are excited about 8-4?

I want Tennessee competing for championships. Not just 8-4 or 9-3.

We have a 1 in 127 chance of winning the national championship, and they all want to do the same thing

Not quite true. Many factors enter the chances of winning football, not just the number of teams playing. Must weigh in: Talent, coaches, injuries, negative fans, weather conditions, playing fields, attitude of players and coaches, strength and condition, parental attitude, nutrition, luck, intelligence of the players, etc. Belicheck's chances of winning are greater than Dooley’s.

Boom? As the original poster has said?

Hardly. This guy is barely a 3 star prospect on Rivals. While I'm always happy to see a kid from Florida want to come to Tennessee, this is not the level of recruit we need to be getting to compete with and beat the top half of the SEC.

Our recruiting this year, while not terrible, is not up to snuff if we are hoping to compete for SEC and National Championships.

The only redeeming quality Butch has had for us thus far in his tenure has been that he is a decent recruiter. However, last year and this year, we are just a notch or two below where we ought to be if we are ever going to be more than an 8-4 mediocre to crappy bowl team, which is what we are under Butch.

It's the movers & shakers decision that UT is the state land grant university with an associated athletics program football team. Not vice-versa. It will be a long, long time before, if ever, we have a UT president like Andy Holt who said something like, "Education is our 'house' but athletics is our 'front porch'". It's what everybody sees first. University of Alabama leadership gets it. Go look what Saban's tenure has done for the whole university.

Don't have nothing to do with Butch. It's above his pay grade.

According to 247sports Auburn offered, but Miami, Florida and FSU did not offer. Why? His highlights show that he has potential, and also shows that 6 of his sacks...no one even touched him.

He must be faster than a speeding train.

Do we as fans read too much into star ratings? Obviously, talent wins championships. Just look at Bama. They're 3 deep with 5 stars and they just keep reloading. This kid is 3 star but has an impressive offer list. We have a lot of 3 stars on our commitment list. I know we've had our issues with 5 stars like Hurd and Williams, but I'm concerned about the lack of "star" talent in this class looking to the future.

I get what you're saying but Nick Saban wins even without a 4 deep roster of 5 star players. It took Saban just one year to go from bowl hopeful to playing in the Sugar Bowl.

2007 Bama was 7-6
2008 12-2
2009 14-0

Recuiting ranks leading up to those seasons are
2003 #49 in the nation
2004 #15
2005 #18
2006 #11
2007 #10
2008 #1

Alabama didn't start pulling in number 1 classes until 2008. You can win without stocking up on all 4 and 5 star players. The 2008 Bama season was a good season for them and springboarded them to where they are now in terms of recruiting. The 2009 Alabama team had one number one class under their belt and they earned a national championship that year.

College ready players are important but coaching them up is more important. Once you have had success, recruiting those 5 star players gets easier.

FSU Miami and FL didn't offer in state 3 star Corey Vereen. He was a big part of Barnett's success.

Not sure about that. Probably the other way around. Plenty of times that Vereen was on the field and Barnett was still getting double teamed.

Southridge had two more players officially enroll early with colleges Wednesday. Defensive back Antwan Collier signed with UCF and defensive end Deandre Johnson signed with Tennessee.

...Johnson (6-4, 275 pounds) finished with 88 tackles and 10 sacks. “The great football tradition and the history of the program at Tennessee is great,” Johnson said. “I loved Knoxville when I went there and I just feel like I can go there and be successful.”

6'4 275?? I thought DeAndre was like 6'3 239. If he has gained that much weight he could play DT too. The only thing I'm worried about is if we have any actual DE's in this class beside Bembry.

Guess Saban and Bama are the dumbest rocks in the nation but yet have one of the best if not the best team in the nation unfortunately.

And UT can't compete with them right now. Butch has to show he can turn the corner and stabalize. Until then he's going to have to find developmental players. The fact is, there are plenty of players who have potential that a good coach can spot if he works a little harder.

Florida has a worse recruiting class than UT. Miami runs a 3-4 and FSU can pick the finished products.
Personally, I like this pick up. I'm not overly impressed with the 4-5 star linemen Butch has signed, other than Barnett. Right now, the productivity is coming from 2-3 star Vickers, Vereen, etc.

I know people joke about Bain, but I'm betting he develops into a productive player at DT. Joey Cave is another guy who put on about 50 pounds after high school, red shirted thos year, and could see the field as a preferred walk on.

Per 247 - Tennessee has the 6th ranked recruiting class in the SEC and trending down. Possible defection of Gray to FSU would be a big hit.

There have been a number of guys like Aubrayo Franklin, Daniel Hood, Danny O'Brien and others who developed into key defensive linemen as upper classmen and were not highly recruited. The physicality required is brutal in the Sec and 5 star guys like McKenzie and Tuttle may not hold up. Message board posters and the "intern level" star assigners from various websites cannot determine upside of these recruits and it is best for a redshirt year and intensive strength work to see how they do. Vols just ran out of linemen this year. Bain was in position for major playing time and he got hurt. It would not surprise me if he gets into the rotation with his size and maturity. Fans are bored and really have too much information worrying if a rival school did not offer. Camps and coaching evaluations are the key and later getting lucky if a player can sustain the grind enough to contribute for 2 or 3 years.

O'Brien was a 4 star. Turned down Michigan among others to go with us.

What do I need to know about him? VN has made me become numb when I see 3*.

8a football
Champs
Winner
Good attitude
15 sacks against solid competition.
6'4" 245 lbs in High School at DE
That is a man child.
He has great potential.
