DE Depth

Then you are giving a large portion of people built in excuses for bad behavior. Chaz Coleman is not a kid. Now I do believe in today’s age of NIL and everything it represents bigger challenges for these young players. Think back to when you were 18 or 19. What would have happened if you had the opportunity to make millions?

I have no idea what’s really going on with Chaz and frankly neither does anyone else on here. Unless you know him or a member of his family or inner circle personally then passing judgement on the guy is beyond lame.
I would have busted my ars to play, but I’d most likely be broke today. lol. I was pretty immature in my 20’s. Slightly more responsible in my 30’s. A little more mature in my 40’s. Very wise in my 50’s. Will turn 60 next March. Let’s see what the next decade brings lol.

Let’s operate under the assumption that Coleman won’t play here (based on the news today).

Here is what we have at EDGE. How bad does this hamper our D? We were gutted in the portal at end.

Any of our massive stable of LBs move down?

(sorry for the one weird column… did it on AI)

But that is razor thin, and 100% unproven.

I don't think we can count on any impact from the three freshman and honestly not expecting much from Gentle. It always seemed odd to me that we signed him in the first place.
That leaves two DEs that can play.
Not good - don't understand why we didn't aggressively add DE's and DT's in the portal.

Or, why we let the guys leave without putting up a fight. I’d say plaza 3-3-5 but we don’t have space eaters on the inside.

Maybe go back to the first page of this thread, post #16. You did not list all our guys who play DE and/or Edge.

I’d rather see this done with Perlotte. He has the length to play Edge, but needs more weight.
Perlotte would be a great candidate, but would need to add considerable weight. Plus he is one of our top 3 LB's in the room. I just feel Tea is going to get lost with the talent now in the LB room. He is a good football player, just slow.

That abundance of talent at LB is exactly why we could afford to put Perlotte at Edge. But you're right, he needs to add weight, so maybe it would just be a situational thing.

I consider anyone under the age of thirty a kid. Especially with the mentality of our youth today. It all goes back to the beginning of the participation trophy era.
Forget the participation trophies.

It goes back to worshipping academia over job experience. Kids stopped working to focus entirely on academics and have no experience in the real world with any adults besides the teachers and coaches. When their only peers are other children of the same age and experience, growing up takes a hiatus until they actually enter the workforce.

As a 40 year old millennial who grew up working on a farm, I’ve been observing this for a long time. When I was a small child it seemed like every teenager had a part time job. By the time I was in high school, about half of the teenagers never worked at all. I don’t think a job requires any more responsibility than school work. It’s the interaction with other adults (especially adult co-workers) that teenagers are missing out on.

I would not count out Carson Gentle. He is a former wrestling champ and track guy. Carson has a lot of athleticism and with Knowles schemes, it will be interesting SACK by Gentle! Mike Keith can create havoc with that.

As for the Coleman fiasco, can you imagine if the Vols had signed Sorsby also?

Why not run a 3-3-5? No question, you need to have your best players on the field and LB is a much more talent rich. No way Coleman is 250 pounds. No way. I’d say Perlotte could carry 235 easily.

You are spot on. It doesn't neccesarily have to be a job per say, but a commitment to something that requires you to put in dedicated work. Something other than hanging out in the bedroom gaming for instance.
I have two children (Adults) around the age of 30. One went to work at 16 because Dad was not going to just hand out money. The other was heavily involved in Football and stayed dedicated, busy year-round working on that craft. (Every summer camp he could sign up for etc) A marginal talent so playing time was not handed to him.

I suspect a lot of these elite athletes don't even show up for practice as a child but still play because some "Coach" wants to feel like they accomplished something.

I believe most high school graduates would agree that they feel completely lost about what to do after high school.

“Coach” usually should be in quotation. It doesn’t take a professional to pick out the most physically imposing people to build a team. Most people are still clueless about what Cignetti is doing at Indiana. The guy is putting the best team on the field - not the best athletes. The use of superior skills combined with a few elite athletes. Not unlike what Steve Kerr accomplished with the Warriors.
