From what I've read from reviews of players and media at MSU, His players have said he's the best DC, They've had, when they had (Bob Shoop and Grantham) and he's one of the best young defensive minds and bet he could be a good recruiter...

I would love this hire. I think his defense would complement Heupel's offense.

I understand this is just a “speculating about who might be hired” thread; but I’d like to toss this out there. The folks who are simply dismissing Shannon as an option aren’t looking at the big picture (defensively speaking). The “Wow, they stink” reaction, which was my first reaction, too, only looks at last year.
However, as has been said elsewhere, the defense this year is an anomaly, and not likely indicative of what you can usually expect from a Heupel team. The opt-outs clearly had a major effect. Points per game was nearly identical his first two years and went up by 10 in this year, a season when 3 starters and a few depth players opted out. Seems clear that 2018 and 2019 are more like what we should expect.

Heupel said in the press conference that the goal was to “create negative plays” on defense. My take on his approach is that you don’t worry that much about giving up a first down or two on a drive because one sack or one tackle for loss, can kill a drive. And, of course, a turnover DOES kill a drive.

So:
2019 3rd in TFL; 36th in sacks; 34th in turnovers
2018 8th in TFL; 49th in sacks; 6th in turnovers
...also 23.0 points in ‘19, and 22.7 in ‘18

The fact the those numbers are so close tell you that this is what he tries to do. Hold teams in the low 20s since you’re going to be putting up 40+.

Having said all that... I want our version of Venables, tenacious and a little crazy, whoever that may be.

I see many in this forum want a DC that has former ties to the University. Can we as fans put bias aside and get the right guy, not the liked guy? Personally, I am not a fan of bringing back old players and coaches unless their last name is manning, and they are named the QB coach.

Absolutely! The way we have been doing it hasn't been working. It is time we try something new

I agree to a point but don’t cut you nose off to spite you face.
Not all University ties are bad.
Dale Jones might be the “right guy”.
Worth checking into.

Also, he has no ties to the sh!t show we have seen here over the last few years.
Like I said, he should at least be looked into.

Heard Chief is in the running, I know alot of people feared the 3rd and Chavis and rightfully so at times🤣 ,he's the one that visited me in high-school and recruited me to Tennessee, he didn't have to try very hard Tennessee was always going to be where I was going. He's probably one of the greatest guys I've ever met. Not sure i would want him to come back though it would be awful for me to see people bashing him after everything he done for me

I will never think getting a coach just because he or she is a VFL but Jones has done a good job at App St. They were #18 in the nation in total defense in 2020 but he only has one year as a DC so I am afraid it is to soon for him . I think we need a Proven Big Time DC no matter who we get.

I'm not sure we could stand the MUSTANG PACKAGE again. LOL He was a good coach though without a doubt.

With the exception of App. State, the man has been in the game this long and not picked up by other FBS teams as a DC, for me that would raise flags. I can see him as a D-Line coach but not a Coordinator.
