Well, there's nowhere to start except at the epicenter of the coaching search that will go a long way in defining Butch Jones' ride on Rocky Top, that of defensive coordinator. Without question, Bob Shoop is the runaway leading candidate. And, honestly, Brady Hoke probably is running in the No. 2 spot at this point.
So, on Shoop: the two sides definitely have spoken in some form or fashion, and we would expect a more formal, face-to-face meeting to be upcoming in the very near future. A three-year contract, either for Shoop or the person deemed the right hire, no longer is off the table. In fact, we believe a third year would have been available for Dave Aranda had Aranda not so rapidly accepted the courting of Les Miles, who we are told boarded a jet and flew to secure Aranda the day after the Tigers' bowl victory.
With Shoop, we're talking a million-dollar-plus contract per year, and that's really not in question. The overriding linchpin in this process, based on sources near and far, is the buyout clause in Shoop's contract, which could be as much as $750,000-800,000.
By and large, Shoop has been roundly praised by most everyone we've reached out to in learning more about the current Penn State defensive coordinator. And, as the G.Q. and other mediums have reflected, he's immensely popular still in Nashville, where Shoop remains incredibly well connected. And frankly, we're told he's got relationships with several current Vols who have indicated they wouldn't at all mind playing for Shoop.
Hoke and UT also have spoken. We also had a Mountain West coach indicate to us this week that Hoke's teams and defenses when he was at San Diego State also were "tough teams." We are also told that Hoke called his own defense when the head coach at Ball State. Hoke has the obvious Michigan ties to the Vols' current staff, and he is close with a number of UT coaches, including defensive line coach and assistant head coach Steve Stripling. Remember, Hoke also visited the Vols a couple times in the past year and usually was housed by the UT staff, never needing a hotel. So there's a clear comfort level there.
One other rumbling surrounding Hoke is that he might be a candidate for the defensive coordinator job at Oregon. It's something we are keeping an eye on.
Where else? There are a couple of NFL guys with interest, and Josh Conklin is a guy who's totally rehabbed his career. He's been a person of interest at Georgia, sources have indicated before Kirby Smart hired Mel Tucker.
