DC Candidates?

Even if Steele might have had a mini-stroke before the game?

Sounds like a good PR move... I might have had a mini stroke, that's why I gave up 70... And if true, it's even more egregious he tried to coach after having one...

If I was a Clemson fan, his defense would have given me a stroke

The only thing that scares me is that 2016 is a big year, the stars are aligned for a real championship push. How often does a team with a first year DC make a strong push? Usually it takes a year for a defense to "gel" with a new system.

Auburn and LSU both offered Shoop lots of money... Can you also name 2 less stable head coaching jobs?

Kacy Rodgers is probably unrealistic but I can dream. He has done really well in NFL. Butch, make him say no.
Wonder if he is more of a DC in title only...meaning Todd Bowles is actually making the defensive calls, like some HC's (who were former DC's) do? If so, then it might not be out of the realm of possibility.

He was only a DL coach the year before, so who knows.

New York Jets: Kacy Rodgers

That makes more sense than LeBeau,Lovie, and some of the other names I've seen... Hell, even Hoke makes no sense

Nice try, but I doubt it. It would be VERY unusual for a player who could have tried to play this Fall to be hired as the DC. Would they promote someone on the staff to be DC and and hire CM to fill in behind that person; maybe but I don't know who it would be.

Tennessee fans have an abysmal history of evaluating defensive coordinators. Jancek was a good coordinator, Wilcox was a better coordinator, and Chavis was an excellent coordinator. Even in Fulmer's last year, Chavis had a top 10 defense. That defense, btw, was on the field most of the time because the offense was a trainwreck.

As for replacements for Jancek--
1. Chavis
2. Shoop
3. Wilcox
4. A proven coordinator under the radar who has a top 25 defense in 2015

That's because the offense gave the defense short fields. I.e. UF scored 30 in 2008 and had 230 yards of offense.

I dont get the love for Orlando? He had one good game against a one dimensional FSU team, they were with out their starting QB.

Not really, Maguire played as much as Golson this year. They were one dimensional because UH shut down the run. Maguire threw for 350+ that game.

His name is being mentioned. Swain just raised questions about Marion only being the co-DC. Said you don't know how much responsibility he has with the defense in that situation, is he the one making the calls? Has he been the one designing the defense and schemes? Just some questions.

But he was the sole DC at Duke I believe. It's believed he's making more as co-DC & DL coach at Clemson than he was as DC at Duke.

Heh, for the non-baseball fans, Paul Depodesta is the Harvard geek statistician behind the Oakland A's success as told in the book and movie, Moneyball (played by Jonah Hill in the movie).

When Butch says, "It's a process" and talks about analytics, he's clearly talking about applying Oakland-style statistical analysis ideas to football.

Of course, being successful at that is a whole nother challenge...it's not like there aren't tons of other coaches and programs trying some variant of it out these days. It's not a rarity like it was back in the Moneyball days.

I know you were being light-hearted about it, PJ, just fun to see all these links lighting up. :good!:

Andrew Friedman and Tampa Bay applied the theory better than Oakland ever thought of.

My roommate at Clemson is on staff today and was on staff then. I heard that the day after the game from him. Said there were defensive calls being made that weren't in their playbook. The staff on the field had no idea where the calls were coming from.

Down period ends Jan 13 and signing date 3 Feb correct? Idk but, Butch going after someone who is aggressive, experienced, fresh ideas, and can help him win a National Championship soon. He believed JJ was not the one to deliver the promised land. Big risk, but I'm drunk on the Big Orange CBJ KOL-aid...go get us a winner!

without a DC...should we start to panic?

Its amazing how much social media has changed us...we expect instant answers...I admit I'm as bad as anyone. I really expected to see a hire today :) but when you think about it the best thing is for Butch to sit back and see who really wants this job...I have no doubt that it is highly desirable.

Justin Wilcox runs a 4-3 and was pretty good while here

Justin did well with a lot less to work with than the talent on this current team. I believe his defense was ranked 28 nationally in 2011. His pass defense was ranked 12th.

I wonder, what would the "Want Ad" in the employment section of the local papers would say? Hmmmmm

EazyTD said in the RF that the money was there for Shoop and that something should leak within 24-48 hours.

If that's true, then that's coaching malpractice. There would be no shame in stepping down for a bowl game if you just had a mini stroke. He shouldve been in a hospital, not a coaches booth
