Northwestern had a top-15 defense and played in the same league. I don't necessarily want their DC either

I think he would likely be a good hire but can understand why some would be hesitant

Shoop is a good coach, I wouldn't blow him off just due to being in the big 10 currently.

Shoop was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Vanderbilt for three years before coming to Happy Valley, directing the Commodores to Top 25 finishes in total defense every season: 18th (2011), 19th (2012) and 23rd (2013).

That being said, I don't see the Vols paying the money to even get a return call from him.

Understandable. I tend to look at his tenure more heavily at Vanderbilt just because it was the SEC to compare. Again, the east was pretty bad during that tenure as well.

My pipe dreams:
Derek mason. Its obvious he wont get it done as a head coach at Vanderbilt. But there is no telling what he is making, plus he will have a buy out when he is fired.

Venables: no reason for him to make a lateral move. Will probably be in the mox for head coaching jobs with another good year.

Shoop: it makes sense to me why he would turn down both auburn and LSU. Both will probably be looking for jobs next year.

Petine (sp?): did have the NFLs leading defense in 2012 with the jets if I remember correctly. I believe he has always been a pro guy though.

Pelini: currently at Youngstown state making $300,000 a year?

Thank you very much! I have just never been blown away by Shoops defenses. That's just my opinion and not everyone sees or looks for the same things in football games .

I think Butch goes for a homerun. CBJ knows we're on the verge and we show the money to get someone dynamic.

Whoa there guy don't be slinging Dick around in here!
Why did you have to go quoting Bruce Gender's wife, Kris (Kardashian) Jenner, for? :)

Not bad LOL . Look at the points given up by PSU this year . Look at the wins and loses and should I bring up they lost to Ga in the bowl game a team that we beat.

I thought at first you just weren't well informed/ didn't keep up with much football wise outside of UT, but then you go and make this post... You're either messing with people or you're just dumb.

He isn't a good DC, because his TEAM lost to a UGA team we beat? (Not even mentioning the fact that his defense held UGA largely in check all game which makes you're point even more laughable, but I digress.)

Now I do realize that the letters "H" and "D" look strikingly similar to you, but I promise there is a difference between being a HC and a DC. Franklin, PSU's HC isn't very good, but their DC, Shoop, has had that unit as one of the best in the nation since arriving even though they were bereft of talent and depth.

who out there is a "home run" that's a realistic candidate?

Pelini.
Best would be LeBeau- pipe dream. He did turn the awful Titan D into finishing 12th in total defense this year. Miracle worker.

Chavis.. New AD so try
Janzek is being let go mainly for running "3rd & Chavis" against a bad Florida offense. Why would we want more of the same? He was no better of a DC than Janzek was, while here. Chavis just lucked out that he landed in a hotbed of Louisiana talent, and had a loaded roster to work with every year.

He got exposed (as an average DC) at TAM, this year.

Ok, not Chavis - been there.

And besides, he doesn't recruit and I'm not sure Jancek did much recruiting either.

Is DC not a recruiting position? Who was Jancek assigned to be the primary recruiter for?

i'm sorry, but there's just a part of me that looks at Chavis, Pellini, Shoop even...and i just think "stale".

we're an up and coming program, and everyone in the SEC is recycling these coaches. how many SEC schools as Kevin Steele been at already? Muschamp? Martinez? Chavis?

doing the same thing over and over again, and only changing the color of the jersey you're doing it for, isn't really changing is it?

anyway, i think this is an opportunity to stand out, and make an impact. maybe shoop is that guy, but i don't think we can afford him.

Chavis wouldn't be bad, but it's not an impact.

Pellini....does he bring his cat? jeez.

i have no idea who it will be....
