David Cutcliffe

I like Cutcliffe, but his time at Duke I think has been kind of overrated. He's really only had 2 great seasons there; 2013 and 2014. The other 8 have been mediocre (which is pretty good by Duke standards) or outright bad. His conference winning percentage is .333.

Duke is a tough place to win, but he hasn't done a Dan Mullen-type of job there. What Mullen has done at Miss St is much more impressive than what Cutcliffe has done at Duke.

He would not be my first pick but I know this much.
He can coach, just watch a Duke game. Solid coaching across the field.
He can win games.
He's not a jeck
He would run a clean program
He would most likely bring home some Tennessee people.
Martin, Graham, Dale Jones, Dickey etc

We could do worse

We can do much, much better as well.

I would take Cut if he could bring Jim Bob Cooter as OC/Head Coach in waiting, hang on to Coach G, and bring back some other Vols. He would bring discipline and solid coaching!

I have the highest level of respect for David Cuttcliffe. He is a VERY good football coach and an honorable man. For these reasons, I do NOT want him to come back to Tennessee.

That said, I do not think for a second that he would.

Would have been terrible then too. He is so overrated because of the Mannings.

Which Manning played for Duke when he took them from 1-2 wins a year to regular bowl games, an ACC title birth, 8 plus win seasons, etc. At DUKE. What Manning played for him in 1998 hen he helped Tee Martin lead them an unbeaten season. Was Heath Shuler's last name Manning?

Heck of a coach, and I would've loved to have had him here back in 2009. Not the right fit now tho IMO.

Not a fan of bringing Cut this point but the suggestion he is a bad coach is non-sense and an indicator of who knows football

Cutcliffe isn't coming back. He didn't like that we did his friend Fulmer wrong, he's happy at Duke, and he dosen't want to deal with this bratty fan base.

From a pure coaching standpoint, Cut would be one of the top 3 UT could get.

His age is a concern. He was never known as a great recruiter so he would have to surround himself with great young recruiters.

He's also the one guy who knows UT and won't be afraid of the job.

Really? Where did he say that Fulmer didn't deserve to be fired? Cut did what he could for Fulmer... Fulmer did it to himself.

On 2nd thought, Cut's age could be an advantage. Let's say he comes in and rights the program. You could hire the HC in waiting to work with him as OC or DC. At 63, Cut is probably going to hang it up in 5 years or less.

He's 63 years old. I want a coach able to be here almost as long as Fulmer if he's the right fit. (16 yrs).

So Cut would be 79.

phuuut...

I was disagreeing with him saying Cut is overrated. He’s not. Cut is not coming here. I know guys on staff. He’s settled in. 6 years ago yeah, it was a done deal, but not now.

Cutcliffe saw how rabid we became over Butch choking....do you all really think a man of his age and health is going to come here after all that......Gruden is more realistic than Cut coming here......he should have already been the man after Kiffin....at least after Dooley....great coach we blew the hire on just like Patterson...Brian Kelly....and a few others for Kiffin.

He has had a little success without them.

98 we had a super talented team. Sanders coached the NC game and we won. We had a great team. Plus its not like the o carried us. It was the d. We won a few games despite the offense that year.

He can coach offense. I don't think he would have recruited well enough. I think we would win 7 or 8 games with him each year and that would be it.

Its not like he is a big winner other places. He is a career .500 coach basically.

Yes he has done pretty well for Duke. But it took him 6 years to win a crappy division. Then his record has gotten worse each year.

No thanks.

He won't come here. Maybe instead of Dooley he would have, if UT hadn't screwed Fulmer, but he won't leave what he's got at Duke.

I'm not sure what Cutcliffe has at Duke. He's very likely on the hot seat next season. I mean, he finished 4-8 last year and is on a 6-game losing streak this year, headed for another 4-8 finish. Mike Griffith is showing how big of a bonehead he is by continuing to push the narrative that Cutcliffe is a top candidate for the UT job. It isn't happening, nor should it.

You guys realize how hard it is to win as a coach at Duke? They don't accept just anyone there. We will accept any star football player here at UT but Duke isn't that way.

Cutcliffe has a 9 and a 10 win season at Duke. Know the last time a Duke team won 9 games prior to Cutcliffe? Try 1941...

Holding his not doing better in the ACC against him is not fair. Put another way: Duke is the Vanderbilt of the ACC
