David Cutcliffe (merged...with sources!)

I can confirm UT has contacted Muschamp, Calhoun, Cutcliffe, Dooley, Kippy. Hearing Golden and Edsall, too

cutcliffe is a good OC and qb coach, and also a decent head coach. that being said, i don't see him getting us anywhere near the next level we need to be. you'd probably be better off hiring fulmer or maybe even tubberville than cut.

Unfortunately, Kiffin has set us up to fall a level without swift action. And, there's no way we can take the same risk with someone else that we did with him. Another one and done and the program is in deep trouble.

I don't know why Tubby wasn't in the talks if his going rate was 1.5. That seems like a bargain if we're just filling the spot.

Where are the REAL UT Fans!!!! I can remember under Cuts direction as OC us having some of our Greatest Seasons including the championship seasons (randy sanders debut the championship game) WTF is the rest of u guys problem!

Cut = decent o/c
Cut = boring
Cut = no personality
Cut = terrible recruiter
Cut = there's a reason he could only get a job at Duke
Kiffin = set us back 5 years
Cut = set us back 10 years
Cut = Cut and Hamilton gone in less than 2 yrs

Cut = Epic fail

calhoun is holding a team meeting at 5:50. Guys hes the new coach. It wont turn it down and he will be brilliant. We lose this whole class who cares. WE will be ok this guy will stay for atleast 5 years and he will rebuild us. I'm calling it now its Calhoun. CTC to vols.

How awful would it be if Kiffin has success at USC and we're sitting here watching a guy that wasn't even good enough for Ole Miss get blown out every weekend. That would be unbearable.

Hey, their not knocking down the door wanting to coach us guys, there is NO ONE jumping ship right now...............well there was one, and good ridance to his ass.

Except Cutcliffe didn't come into Duke poppin off and talkin trash to respectable programs, giving it a little worse image, though it couldn't get any worse there, he also wouldn't be leaving it with the NCAA up its a55 with invesitgations, and he probably wasn't promising championships to everyone, and making empty promises to players....In other words he's shown a lot more class at Duke, then LK did here. He pretty much came in created a bit of a mess and left

No, you're completely correct.

If you look at the Duke equivalent of VolNation (Duke Basketball Report - This Is A Fan's Joint! - we don't have any football focused forum), you'll see that everyone is sad at the fact he's potentially leaving, but there are no hard feelings (except for Kiffin, for putting us in this position!).

Cutcliffe has made an indescribable difference on Duke in just two years. He took a program that was in real, real danger (such low attendance that if it weren't for the $$ grail of Duke basketball, we'd probably be in deep trouble with NCAA for not making the attendance minimums) and turned us around. Our 5-7 record this past year was the best record we've had in 15 years.

Over the past ten years we've gone 0-11 (2000), 0-11 (2001), 2-10 (2002), 4-8 (2003), 2-9 (2004), 1-10 (2005), 0-12 (2006), and 1-11 (2007) before Cutcliffe showed up on the scene (4-8 and 5-7, respectively).

If he can go 5-7 at Duke, with our players (who I love but probably wouldn't be able to walk-on at UTenn typically), imagine what he could accomplish as head coach of a team with better players.

So, you're right. If Cut leaves us for you guys, he's leaving us better than he found us -- by far. But we just hope he doesn't leave :) Only two years! Imagine, if he stuck around in Durham for a few years we might make it to 9-3 or something! :) (There would be bonfires if that happened!)

Emily, you should keep posting here. You seem like an intelligent person.

Does Cut have the authroity to throw in a couple of your basketball players if we hire him?

the guys we are talking about would have said NO to everybody. Quit doing the poor us thing. Muschamp would ONLY leave for GA cause he's from there. Patterson has said no to everybody. Calhoun I think we said no to if he doesn't come cause hamilton is weak and doesn't want to lose the recruits. USC had 4 coaches including Sark up in freakin Washington say NO. This is football. We named Cower. Seriously? Seriously? Cower said no to the freakin Bills. An NFL team. And Gruden? Seriously? Why, he'll be back in the pros next year. Realistic list here guys at this time of year. This was baaaaddd timing. two weeks ago we'd have Tubberville begging for the job like a dog in heat. Kiffin skrewed us.

One of the better quotes I have read all day. Well done my friend.

I wouldnt have a problem with Cutcliffe. He is a great QB coach and X's and O's guy IMO. He has brought Duke out of the cellar and he did coach that Peyton guy.

Thanks - you guys are nice and it sucks to be in this position, but re: basketball players -- NEVER. GONNA. HAPPEN. :wink:

Associated Press - January 14, 2010 5:25 PM ET

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Duke coach and former Tennessee assistant David Cutcliffe may be a target in the Volunteers' search for a new head coach.

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton has not commented publicly on who his candidates are to replace Lane Kiffin, who abruptly resigned Tuesday night to coach Southern California.

But Duke spokesman Art Chase called reports of a deal between Cutcliffe and Tennessee inaccurate.

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun released a statement Thursday saying he was looking forward to coaching the Falcons again in 2010, ending speculation that he was a candidate.

Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and TCU coach Gary Patterson have both said they have not been contacted by Tennessee.

AP Sports Writer Joedy McCreary contributed to this report.

Cutcliffe is a great OC and qb coach. He has done a great job at Duke, but the program really couldnt fall any lower. That is the ACC, this is SEC football. I just don't think he is the name we are looking for. He is 55 years old, and I know he had some health issues in the past. How long can we expect this guy to be around. Will we be doing this again in 2 or 3 years? At the very least I would make sure all of the assistants would stay, that is the only chance to salvage any kind of recruiting. That being said if it is Cutcliffe, I will be watching all the games from my living room next year and keep my donation for the first time in 10 years.

I think most people are really down on him because he is so closely associated with our past regime. What was always amazing to me was how much better our offense was with Cutcliffe than without him. If anything it always made me wonder what Fulmer was doing. I think Cutcliffe is a great offensive mind, but he would need to surround himself with a really amazing staff to make me want to accept him as the HC. His record at Ole Miss scares me, but then ... it was Ole Miss.
