Although I was familiar with some Bowie hit songs before, as well as his roll in Labyrinth, I was really introduced to his music when Nirvana performed The Man Who Sold the World on their unplugged special. As soon as they said it was a Bowie song I sought out the original version on a greatest hits album.

Despite having gone through other classic artist like The Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Stones, Doors, etc, Bowie opened my mind to a new world of what Rock n Roll could be.

I heard the sad news this morning. "Heroes" is the song that keeps rolling through my mind.

I've been sitting in a hotel room all morning finishing up some work. I pulled up Bowie's new album, Blackstar, and have listened to it twice thru. I'd only heard a track or two prior to today. It's quite obvious, now, that he meant this as a farewell.

I recommend it to anyone. It's both brilliant and heartbreaking.

We just saw a commercial for his album a few days ago and my wife commented that she hoped he would tour again because we'd never seen him live.

Video: David Bowie's last release, Lazarus, was 'parting gift' for fans in carefully planned finale - Telegraph

The video was eerie to watch even before today.

All around talent

When I was about 13 years old the local cable company dropped MTV for about a year and replaced it with The Box, a channel you called a 900 # to request videos. While Baby Got Back and Right Said Fred got the majority of play, that video was on constant rotation during Christmas time. It was a classic then.

To a young weirdo who never fit in, Bowie said to me, "who cares?" He said, "be who you want to be." He was my existentialist teacher years before I knew what existentialism was. He taught me that the only thing that was weird was worrying about being weird. Once you get over that, you're free to recreate yourself as the person you want to be, a process that never stops.

Until it does.

Rest in peace, sir.
