Davenport officially named Chancellor

The best way to think about it is like a CEO of a big business. UT is the business and it's broken down into various colleges, positions, etc. She's the person who is responsible for overseeing all of it and keeping it running efficiently and effectively.

A somewhat dysfunctional big business as any governing hierarchy clashes with the realities of tenured employees.

The Ad reports to UTK Chancellor. It is important that Chancellor, Provost and AD can all work together and share the same vision for UTK.

Then there is no delay wrt appointing the new AD. A Provost is a long search.

For any who are not clear about the UT hierarchy, here's how it lines up....
Dr D Pietro is the President of the University of Tennessee.
As such, he is over UT Knoxville, UT Chattanooga, UT Martin, and (technically but not practically) UT Memphis (medical). He has responsibility for other activities, but those are the big ones. On each campus there is a Chancellor appointed to see to the running of that particular institution. So, Di Pietro has four subordinate Chancellors, Davenport being just one of them. The chancellors work for the university president, the various directors, deans, and provosts work for their campus chancellor.

Thanks - hopefully folks will realize a Chancellor's only job is not to hire an AD. Some seem to think that is the case.

Besides Tennessee does have an AD on staff until the middle of next year. She could very easily decide to direct / work with the one that is there until someone else is hired.

Timing is going to depend upon if those in charge of making this decision (e.g. those hired by the University) feel this is a critical "must do quickly" thing or not.

seems you have much doubt this is about to happen?? or is it hope it doesn't happen soon?

the issue is, there are football staff leaving. to replace them, an athletic director needs to be hired. coaches are not comfortable going to a place where it is unknown who is in charge.. really could put football behind the 8 ball in recruiting and going into to spring if AD not named very, very soon. much like what happened when Kiffin bolted

Are you still confident about Blackburn LW?

I have no clue of timing. I just know that decisions made quickly without giving someone new to a job time to evaluate a situation have a high risk of not being good decisions.

That is not to say that the folks most on here want as AD is not a good hire. But at the end of the day the AD and Chancellor must align with their vision or it will not be good for the university.

To ensure you get the right person that is going to work out and not leave in the middle of the night for their dream job, you seriously interview more than 1 person.

It can happen Monday and it wouldn't mean it went down quick.

I agree.

She will interview (might have already) the people that have shown interest in the job and it will be more than one. They had 4 or 5 other candidates that they checked on but not interested..

LWS- do you have any idea when Blackburn and Davenport will meet? Hubbs mentioned she has met with Gilbert but not Blackburn and that sent some blood pressure up in the RF. I am praying it was to appear like an actual search and they are not seriously considering Gilbert!! I know you have been confident all along with Blackburn- has anything changed? I think many of us are just nervous until he is formally announced. This is one of the most critical hires in my opinion with not only football, but basketball and other sports as well. Thanks for your insight!!

We're going to have trouble hiring assistants no matter what. People are well aware that a coaching change could be made next year. Won't be able to convince them otherwise. Not saying nobody will take it, just that there's going to be uncertainty regardless of the athletic director.

You may be right but a couple on staff now needs to go and I think better, maybe not the greatest will be a step up.

I do not think we will have too much trouble. Yeah it'll need to be addressed, but if you come in here and help turn this program around you'll be seen as a savior. If not, well you'll still get paid and have the experience to catapult you into another job.

Helfrich is just a great matchup with our offense and players. He would do wonders for our QBs. Hoke would be a great upgrade. Fair would be the biggest upgrade. And if Azzani goes and they bring in Napier that's also an upgrade. All the coaches we need to upgrade our staff to be competitive in the SEC are there, it's just Butch's decision if he takes them to save his job. In doing so he'll have to be comfortable with giving them more control over their schemes and quit micromanaging so much. He has to let the coaches we pay a lot of money run their units as they see fit and quit trying to put his touch and input on everything. Obviously his system isn't working. Also, not only will these moves be seen as upgrades by us, the recruits will notice it as well.

I am so uneasy about this AD hire. It is so important for the future of our program that they get this right. I wish they would just announce Blackburn already.

Jimmy Hyams said on today's edition of the Sports Source show that he heard a new athletic director will probably be named in February 2017.

I want Blackburn, but it is not good we are still not attracting candidates. I know that might be because some view Butch on the hot seat entering 2017, but still....
