Dave is shopping at Dollar General

Not what I'm saying.

You are already trying to steer this thing to your narrative which will be "we had a good coach and we traded him for coach x who is worse."

Not at all, if that's what happens though you can bet I will call it like I see it. I won't stick my head in the dirt like you've assured us you're going to do and call the next coach an upgrade regardless of who he is or what his resume is.

I'm convinced if we landed Will Wade you would pronounce him as an upgrade.

Nope.

As bad as it may sound, I will consider whoever we get an upgrade. I was over Martin and did not mind seeing him go. It looks like Hart was more less over him as well. Most of the coaches who seem to be mentioned(Tyndall, Mack, White, and a few others) have similar or better resumes than Zo did coming into UT. I'd consider just about anyone an upgrade.

Of course we are shopping there, that is the current state of our administration. They refuse to spend the money it takes to win and have to redo the process 3-4 years later which is why we can't seem to get over the hump. Then, they complain we have no money.

What's crazy is Hart could hire Marshall at 3.75 million a year for 6 years today. If the team never wins more than 22 games over the next 3 years it would be Hart's fault per the fans.

IMO you don't offer top 10 type $$ to a coach unless your 100% sure he would be an SEC title winning/national title contender coach at Tennessee. Could Marshall or Smart be that guy? Maybe. Maybe not. There in lies the issue with just writing the check.

You say "that is the current state of our administration", but when has Tennessee ever opened their checkbooks to attract a big name basketball coach with a proven D1 success rate?

If Hart goes out and hires a big name who fails, I applaud Hart for trying and blame the coach. If Hart goes out and gets the blue light special and it's a failure, then it's Hart's failure.

You may do exactly that but most will blame or praise Hart for the success or failure of the hires he makes as AD.

For an athletic director who has not spoken or given any indication of his search there sure are a lot of people that seem to know exactly what he is thinking. Amazing mid readers in these parts!

"Money is a major component of this search, without making an absurdly obvious statement. What does that mean? That Tennessee could, a number of sources told us, have gotten say Gregg Marshall or Tad Boyle to the negotiating table if the Vols could pay well north of $2 million. The simple fact is that UT doesn't believe it's in that position; sources have indicated it would be an extremely rare or unforeseen scenario that would force Tennessee into doling out a new deal that exceeds $2 million annually. As someone indicated to VolQuest.com this week, $1.3 million from Martin's buyout represents about half of the Vols' continued ridiculously low reserve funds"

You are probably right. However, that should not keep them from putting a quality coach in place. The number one way to begin rebuilding that fund is for the city of Knoxville to eliminate the entertainment tax. Then many of the musical acts that avoid Knoxville because of it can come into TBA during the off-season, and UT's cut can do straight into the reserve fund. Not to mention the percentage of ticket income UT is shoveling into the city's coffers because of it. Hopefully, that is in the works.

You can thank Jimmy Cheek for allowing this basketball program to fall back into obscurity. If he doesn't pony up to even hire the likes of Ben Howland, whom personally begged Dave for the job, you can kiss all proverbial hope for Tennessee Basketball goodbye.

You have no concrete proof that Howland "begged" Hart for the job.

I don't think Hart has any plans to spend the money to get a top coach. However he does want it to look like they are willing to spend the money so I look for news to surface that he offered the Job to someone like Marshall but got turned down. The bottom line is if they were serious about getting one of the top coaches they could make it happen but they will not spend the money. The whole athletic department is the worst it has ever been. Even the band is all messed up. It is a joke in my opinion.

So getting turned down is better than looking cheap?
