Knoxville sports radio is intolerable.

Nashvilles isnt much better. The clay travis show is pretty good, he has blaine bishop on and they do great cfb and ncaa coverage.
but the drive home show opened with hockey and then a little more hockey with a quick interview with donta hightower.

Then they talked media days, they are kinda clueless I think to the demographic.
When CFB starts they will lead off talking baseball till baseball is over.

I am not a huge Hooker fan, but I will love having a third sports option for the drive home every day. I've written Hyams off almost like I have done with their embarrassingly bad morning show. Maybe Hooker will at least talk about relevant football and basketball issues throughout the year.

The clowns in the AM were kind of trashing Ed Brantley's decision to start another sports talk station here in Ktown. Evidently he got tired of Mickey Dearstone and his idiocy. I listen to Mike and Mike now but it doesnt start till 630 on AM so I get the three stooges for 15 or so minutes in the morning.

I enjoy Hooker from an entertainment standpoint. At least having a former player on the radio will give some better insight into the game. If you have ever seen Hubbs and Hyams you know there is no way they ever played the game. I take whatever they say as hearsay.

Brantley was canned. The new station won't be "sports talk" as they will just be doing the one show directed towards sports. The rest will be news talk. Brantley and Pirkle are going to wipe the floor with the new 98.7 staff. If for no other reason, they've got the WNOX call letters and that big stick.

Don't listen to TB as much as I used to but he has to be better than "garbage". He put Hooker in the business, I think Dave Nathan as well, also first put Chris "Blimp Hubs" Low on the radio when he was a nobody working for Nashville, (i hate Low's work btw), he was the first to put Mike Griffith on the radio, (who started off ok but gradually got obnoxiously intolerable to the point he is now), helped with Fred White, and a few others that don't readily come to mind. Basilio aside, his callers make his show, way better than moron talk with John & Jimmy.

I listened to Tony because he's a fan and speaks as a fan. Give me that any day over that garbage on the "animal".

Wasn't Hooker's departure from Basilio less than amicable....and largely unexpected?

Seems like I recall something about Tempe.

I can't stomach more than 5 minutes of that morning program. I don't care what's going on, or how badly I want to know it, I just can't listen to it. They vacillate between making random and often baseless statements and placating Mikey's ego.

How much sincere and honest debate would you have with your boss, on any subject, especially in such a public forum? About as much as they genuinely have - very little.

I get the fact that most in the local media are not Vol fans - and I even see the benefit of it, at least to a degree - but some of those guys are just flat condescending both toward Tennessee, and its fans. Hooker has somewhat tempered it over the last year or so, but he was amongst the worst for doing that for awhile.

How hard would it be to get a few "educated" and "knowledeable" posters to start a sports show here in K-town? Something low-budget but could work their way up..

I'd much rather listen to that instead of Dickey Mearstone and Heather "I'd be much hotter with Duct Tape covering my mouth" Harrington.

I was a radio personality and music director in Knoxville for almost seven years (just recently left for a better job) and I loved it. It wasn't sports radio, but I'd love nothing more than to do a little non-corporate sports show for fun once in a while.
We should do a Volnation podcast, at least!

This is actually not a loaded question -

Why does Tony seem to be the odd man out in town? Although he has some detractors, more people seem to like him than not - and yet, he's never invited to participate in any of the round robin things (i.e. Sports Source, etc.), and he seems perpetually stuck in the rear, lost on AM. If he was as popular as he appears, why wouldn't someone forming a new sports talk format bring him over to FM, and re-pair him with Hooker?

I know that much could be chalked up to being competitive with one another, but for some reason, it always seems like there is more to it than that.

Anyone else get the same sensing, or have any idea why such might exist?

There was an article about it here in the the paper but I missed it. I thought when the lease was up, Brantley picked up and left to start a new format for 100.3. I knew they were going for a talk station but I thought they were doing like 50/50?? At any rate, having more choices is good for me.

I'm sure we could make it happen. I've dabbled in radio a bit myself. Not on-air, but the behind the scenes aspect of it. Mostly low-wattage stuff though.

How hard would it be to do a volnation Pod-Cast ? I wonder if Freak has ever looked into it?

He doesn't know how to play politics and doesn't seem to want to learn. I wish that he was on opposite of Moron Talk, he would drive them out of business.

You could be right. I don't think everything that was in the original press release will work out for the new WNOX. I think Limbaugh is staying with the old crew, and there might have been one other snafu. I just wonder if Pirkle will sue Citadel for playing that 98.7 promo every :10.
I currently work with another former Knoxville radio guy, so we were really interested in this story when it broke. I think they are even putting Colmes up against Hannity. That could be interesting.
I haven't heard what other sports programming they'll put on the new WNOX.

I honestly don't know enough about the inner workings of the local media scene to know what, "playing politics" entails.

What in your opinion is the best in Nashville? I never listen to talk radio, but I wouldn't mind every now and then? TIA.

Doesn't have much to do with who's IN the media, it has more to do with who OWNS the local media and a few major players that buy advertising.

I really enjoy listening to hooker. Not the most insightful guy but the most entertaining by far. Sports are all about entertainment, after all.

Brantley was let go by Citadel as the eliminated the General Manager position in all but five of their markets.

The contract for the lease of the 100.3 frequency was canceled as a part of the Citadel bankruptcy. Part of that contract had been that, if the Citadel-Pirlke contract ended, then the call letters would revert back to WOKI on 100.3 before the transfer. Pirkle and Brantley had planned to operate a country station with the WOKI call letters to compete with WIVK. However, with the cancelation of the contract, the call letters remained WNOX, and there was not a contractual obligation to return those to Citadel.

With that, Pirkle and Brantley saw the opportunity to seize nearly all of the current WNOX audience by keeping talk on that frequency and acquiring much of the syndicated programming. Limbaugh, along with Hallerin Hill and Phil Williams remain with Citadel and are now on 98.7, which will now move forward with the call letters WOKI.

Currently, the only sports programming that will air on the new WNOX 100.3 will be the Hooker and Fair show from 3-6 every afternoon. The rest of the day and weekends will be filled with news and talk programming.

There is some talk that they may try to do some high school football this fall. Next year, look for them to add a major sports property like the Westwood One NFL package, NASCAR, or the Atlanta Braves.

The Vol Network contract was not canceled in the Citadel Bankruptcy, and that programming will continue to be produced at the Citadel studios and air on Citadel's 107.7 and 99.1/990.

The problem with Hyams is he's not honest. He's says he doesn't have a fave college team but he loves the Saints. Yet he reported on LSU. Just come out and say it. He figures it gives him credibility when he says he's not a Vol fan. Who cares he knows nothing about sports. You ask him a deep question he either refers to John or adlibs. What a joke.
