Dave Hart to Retire June 30, 2017

It works out well for UT if Barnes can get the UTBB dumpster fire extinguished while Wade gets more experience. However if he's too successful at VCU he might not want to try competing in the SEC. Conference competitiveness is cyclical and the SEC is heading upward after hitting rock bottom. VCU has better job security. Their fans probably don't turn on their coaches as quickly and viciously either.

If he's successful VCU will pay to keep him. We'd have to change our mentality on willingness to pay a bball coach. Smart was making $3m when he left

I may be one of the few who think he has done a very good job. But throw out the women's BB decisions and I think he des r ves an A.

Hart's amended agreement is executed. From the KNS:

Nothing in the contract amendment prevents UT from hiring a new athletic director before Hart's retirement date. The university is only required to give 15 days notice to accelerate Hart's retirement and place him on paid administrative leave.

Count me in with the few. I thought Hart did a great job considering the terrible conditions he walked into. Was he perfect? No, but I'd give him a B+.

Peyton's looking for work--hire him as AD, pay him $2-$3 million---that's decent walking around money for him with all the other business stuff he has going on.

John Adams had an interesting insight in today's KNS that UT needs to hire their new ad soon so if CBJ has a great season, other schools could come knocking at his door if UT is slow to name a new AD. One thing the new AD will have to decide is the fate of Serrano.

I would throw in the improper vetting of Donnie Tyndall (there was a red flag with him from Morehead St) but I agree that for the most part he did a good job under some tough circumstances. I would give him a 'B'.

Good read on Blackburn:

Discipline when necessary, mold young minds, turn boys into men. Blackburn is a father figure on the gridiron. He has a deep, loud voice — a snarl maybe — but is soft and gracious in his lessons, earnest in his musings. He is strong in stature, intimidating even. Kippy Brown, former coach at UT Knoxville and of the Seattle Seahawks and one of Blackburn's many mentors, grew up around the Blackburn family and worked closely with David for a number of years with the Volunteers.

"I promise you, if I can describe him in one way, I would say that he is absolutely the real deal," Brown says. "He's a first-class person. Nothing was ever given to him, either. He worked for everything."

Blackburn started his career in athletics cleaning jock straps and tidying up locker rooms at UT. He was promoted many times over, first to a student assistant in the Johnny Majors era, then to an assistant director of compliance and director of football operations in the Phillip Fulmer era, finally moving on to fundraising as the assistant athletic director for development.

"He is the kind of guy who can exert authority," says Brown. "Not many people can do that and toe that line of efficiency and personality. He's been exposed to the whole gamut in this business. He makes everything he touches better by putting his spin on it."

I would love to see Brian Noland and David Blackburn hired for our chancellor and AD. One can hope this comes to fruitation paired with CBJ and other staffs I think we would see great results for a long time to come. Any body with pull or that can make suggestions can place some bugs in some ears.

I would give him a B had he hunted down and hired Butch Jones. Since Butch basically chased him down I can't give him full credit. Basketball hires have decimated both programs for years to come and then there is the baseball hire and extension. Maybe he was just unlucky.

Blackburn...with Fulmer as a FB figurehead. We need an Orange Revolution to throw all of the carpet-baggers out and return UT to its previous glory. We've been too long without leadership that loves, and has a vested interest in being a Volunteer.

BINGO!!!!!!!! Hart has done everything he could to destroy Tennessee tradition. They should run him off right now. David Blackburn is old-school Tennessee. It would be great if they get him. All Tennessee all the time!

Athletic Director at a Power 5 institution = CEO of a small corporation. Calls for someone with extensive experience in the field.

Does Phil Fulmer have plenty of that kind of experience? I honestly don't know. A lot of long-time head coaches pick up a great deal of it by standing shoulder to shoulder with the AD. Heck, some even serve as AD while continuing to coach (less and less at the P5 schools; just too big a job).

I'd be more comfortable with a guy like Blackburn who clearly knows the business inside and out. Love Phil, but David is far better qualified.

Tennessee opted against Hart extension before his retirement

In an Aug. 10 email, University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro told Chancellor Jimmy Cheek "for the reasons we have discussed concerning what is in the best interests of the University, including the fact that a new Chancellor will assume office within the next year, I agree with your decision not to extend Mr. Hart's contract for two years with increased compensation."

Jimmy Cheek essentially fired Dave Hart is what I'm reading. One last shot the Booger took at UT before he's gone.

I know this made a lot of fans happy, and it could be a really good thing. I just hope the next guy is someone that is good at his job, because if he's another Hamilton as far as sports go................

I'm not even going to finish that sentence.

The good news: Dave Hart was a vast improvement over his predecessor. The bad news: his predecessor was Mike Hamilton. Hart was not a complete bust, but the Vols could do a helluva lot better.
