...in his first season as defensive coordinator, the Badgers ranked fourth in the Big Ten in total defense.

-That translates to a 10th ranking at best in the SEC...

Bielema was a great DC at Wisconsin before he became head coach. So he hired and promoted Doeren, which shows a lot of faith. Wisconsin has a pretty consistent defense with Doeren and many times, as has been said, have been doing more with less. They are tenacious on D.

2008 was his first season at DC, here's the results.

2009 results here.

He ranked 44th nationally against the run in his first season, and 5th in his second. Good improvement.

Pass defense 44th in 2008, and 55th in 2009.

Part of the reason for the improvement v. the rush and decreasing stats v. the pass might be they were winning more games in 2009, so the other teams had to pass more.

Their rushing offense was 14 and 15 in those years, so their defense would be on the field for approximately the same amount of time. They probably faced a lot more passing in 2009 since their scoring offense improved dramatically.

Total defense was 37th nationally in 2008 and 17th in 2009. Top 20 defense out of the Big 10 with the recruiting challenges is nothing to look down on, imo. 66th to 33rd in scoring defense is a good improvement, but he still gave up 21 points a game.

Interesting to look at, but at this point, still very much a smokescreen to me.

When we hire a DC some will like, some will not. It is hard to compare a DC's knowledge and what he would be able to do with Tennessee's players. We can not look Wis. or LA Tech and compare. What Spangler has done at LA Tech is impressive and if he has the knowledge then why not at Tennessee with Top talent. This could go for anyone. I have been most impressed with CDD and the way that he has been looking for someone that not only is a name but fits in with Tennessee Football and the SEC.

Farmer Fran has been hired as DC. My sources, working from inside Leo and Ken's truck stop in Lawton, Ok have confirmed the hire. The hire was also confirmed through patrons at John and Cook's barbecue. Official announcement is scheduled for halftime of today's BB game.

everyone needs to withhold judgement untill everything is settled. if it is him it is a solid hire. i mean everyone acts like we should be hireing the megastars. monte was a mega star and his def didint do so hot last year. he is a smart guy and he is going to get the right people. they know more about x's and o's than we do...chill

I am not sure most people understand how well CMK did with that unit , considering the lack of depth on the D line, playing with no real rotation , young linebackers and injured backers.

He did excellent considering this ...that would have been a terrible defense given the schedule ...with just about anybody else coaching

And your excited about the guy who recruited a team with that little speed? If your excited about his recruiting, I just don't know. I'm not saying the guy is bad. I dont know. But I don't see much here that says he is really good, especially at recruiting. I guess I'm also not a big fan of bielema(sp?). I saw his horrible game management skills in the tenn bowl game. Can we say run the ball? If he had they would have beaten tenn by two touchdowns. Guess I can't hold that against doeren though.

This guy has been Wisconsin's recruiting coordinator he brings his recruiting skills to the table. He has been a good not great DC. Thompson was not a great DC either. In the end, I would be ok with this hire but not overly excited. Recruiting is more then half of winning in big time college football. If Dooley hires this guy he clearly understands that.

Kelly is the only coach I know of who has had much success and sucks at recruiting. Dorean with Smith would make for an awesome recruiting staff on D. The question would be can they coach? Dorean has done enough to show he is a good coach but has not wowed me atleast. 17 overall last year and their offense was not very good. Many of the scores against the D were off turnovers. Ohio St. had two INTs basically returned for TDs and a punt return for a TD. That was 21 of their 31 points. Wisconsin cannot defend the pass well with out taking too many men out of the box but like most teams that are not in the SEC get few big time DB recruits. These guys are generally in warmer weather areas. It is hard to defend teams with good WRs and QBs when your DBs are the speed of our LBs, I exaggerate but not by much.

Looking at their recruiting...they had one guy as a DB who runs under a 4.5...that is one guy. We just had a LB commit who runs under a 4.5...McCoy and Mayo are as fast as their DBs. It is what it is. All about scheme in the Big Ten and coaching except for OSU and maybe Penn St.(recently doing well in recruiting).

They are in the Big Ten dude. No one has speed at DB if they are not OSU...Penn St. and Michigan do at times but Michigan is down right now. It is convincing a guy from FL to come live in an ice box. If you really think that should be done if a good recruiter at Wisconsin then you need to study recruting a little deeper. As in where do the speed guys come from...

ok. So he can't do what everyone knows needs to be done to beat osu. That's our guy... Yes, do realize that recruiting to Wisconsin and big ten would suck. My point is him being the recruiting coordinator there with their current roster does nothing to make me feel good. Great, so he can't get fast deep south guys to go there like everyone else. Why is that good recruiting? I do believe that cdd knows how to recruit so I trust he will get good recruiters, but this Gus resume doesn't unto itself make me feel good.

He landed several 4 star guys on O over the years. He did not just recruit D. OSU plays in a talent rich state that is more southern and closer to other talent. OSU is also a traditional powerhouse. It is like saying Arkansas should out recruit UF. If they are competitive it is a win.

Read his bio and give me reasons for the statement you make!:fool:

And I am totally unimpressed. 22 points per game in the big ten translates into 28 to35 points per game in the SEC where you have much more speed. I admit that he plays solid pass defense, but if you can not stop the run in this conference you are dead in the water. He has no recruiting connections in the south. I think that we would be better naming Lance Thompson DC and finding a better supporting coach.

Did anyone see the Ohio State Oregon bowl game? To say the Big Ten still has no speed is absolutely wrong.
