Had the fanbase been more patient and administration more understanding of the changing dynamics of college football, he could have helped Fulmer turn the program around and into what Bama had been; only a decade earlier. Fulmer saw the changing offense landscape and brought in one of the best. Clawsen and the clawfense was not bad nor is it now. Just have to have the right players. Evident Fulmer knew what he was doing with the two QB recruits he had coming in.

You are judged by your results, not what could have been (ifs and butts). Saban adapted to changing landscaping with only losing more than 2 games a season only once (2010) after his first one at AL. Do you not remember how dysfunctional 2008 offense was ? How everyone ran around clueless while Crompton threw pick after pick ? This post is almost akin to saying our defense would have been great had we given sunseri more time.

Clawson's schemes are 'good' for smaller school ... they were a disaster in SEC and he never made the jump anywhere big ever .. Its not like Clawson was burning it up at Wake. His teams lost 5 or more games every year except one of the 11 years he was there. 4 years out of 11, they lost 8 or more games ... near half time 8 or more lol.

Fulmer lost battles in recruiting as well as adapting which lead to end of his great career. No way to sugarcoat it.

Clawson won every where he coached. He is a very good coach with a high IQ. Wake Forest cannot compete with larger schools that have a greater commitment to NIL funds. When UNC agreed to hire Belichick, he saw the writing on the wall. There is no way Wake can compete with that. The threat of Belichick effectively ran Clawson out of Wake Forest.

Wake Forest could not compete before NIL.

You could actually go back to 1955 and that number changes to 9 times.

9 years since 1955 has Wake Forest lost less than 5 games in a season. How is that competitive?
Yep. Not sure how people have this 'myth' about Clawson winning everywhere. In 11 years at Wake, dude lost 5 or more games every year except one year and lost 8 or more games 4 years.
I know its not an elite football school but that conference (ACC) has many below average schools and any good coach would win a lot.

Fulmer's worst hire as the Tennessee head coach along with Pruitt when he masqueraded as the athletic director.

He's arguably the best coach in their history, with a .49 winning percentage. some notable coaches from the past

John Mackovic .41
Bill Dooley .44
Al Groh .39
Jim Caldwell .29
Jim Grobe .48

gotta go back to Peahead Walker's 1937-1950 tenure to find anyone above .500

My father-in-law started for Wake waaaay back in the day (he blocked for Brian Piccolo and was recruited by Beattie Feathers). He would be the first to tell you...it's a beautiful campus but basically the football games are a high school environment.

Wake is a tough school academically and North Carolina, oddly enough, has 7 FBS schools. They are tied for 3rd most in the nation with California and Florida and only surpassed by Ohio and Texas.

Incidentally, and only from my outside baseball knowledge of that time, Phil didn't really want to hire him. That's why it was so easy to fire him. Switching lineman 'strong to quick' doesn't work in realistic competitive big college football anymore. Hasn't worked for years.
