Darrin Kirkland Transferring

Surprised me at first, but then I think back to the spring game when Bituli was pissed off yelling at everyone on the sideline. Kirkland was sitting next to him and looked like he couldn’t care less.

It's true, this cake was probably baked a long time ago. But, you can't be a great linebacker and be made of glass. We basically haven't had Kirkland for the last 2 years, so from a purely football perspective, it's not like we're actually missing anything. I still wish things had worked out and we would have had more guys back there in a 3-4 defense though. But this is the SEC and it just means more guys have got to step up.
GO VOOOOOOOLS!!!!!!!

It is concerning that CJP was apparently unaware DK was leaving (based on press having to ask him about the tweet). Would have been a better look if CJP had made the announcement before the DK tweet. In the end it doesn't matter other than it makes CJP look like he's not really in touch with his players.

I assume DK Jr. made a choice and didn't tell the coaches. I don't think that reflects on Pruitt. If anything, it reflects on DK Jr. not going about it the right way, manning up, and telling his coach in a face to face. But the youth these days, they tend to do everything through social media. Creates a cluster imo. JMO, there are better ways to go about making announcements.

But, can't put the genie back in the bottle. Good luck, God bless, thanks for the memories. Someone else will step up.

Don't know the "why" and probably never will. Do know that he was one the smartest linebackers to wear the orange, made his team better by recognizing offenses and getting them in the right place, and when he was healthy he could really bring it. Bad loss in my book.

We probably won't know the "why". Does anyone have any info on his injury and if he was going to be full go for the fall? If he was limping into fall camp maybe he thought he would have too far to catch up or it may be as simple as he wants to end his college career with Thig. If he ends up at UNC I'd say the latter.

Look at that dude.

Just a different breed of football player.

Darrin Kirkland was very effective when healthy.

But we never saw his best. And most of it is on him. Kid was not physical as a MLB should be.

If he can stay healthy. And tweak his game to be more of hitter...
Then he the guy will be in the NFL

regardless. I think Sapp and Peterson will do just fine. Ignot needs to have a great summer in the weight room.

I agree with your last statement, but depth is my concern.

Exactly. You’d think after the injuries we’ve had over the past two years people would understand how important it is to have reliable backups. We really need 6 or 7 “starters” at LB to have depth of champions.

I think we'll be fine.

But it sure would have been good to have a healthy Darrin Kirkland beside Daniel Bituli.

I agree.

My comment was in response to 1974's post just above mine. I probably should have quoted it. :dunno:

Yep. I think the best teams are those that have a competitive 3 deep. It's not enough to have 22 starters that are pretty good. What happens when injuries and fatigue set in?

Until they prove it otherwise, this staff seems to be able to cut through the crap and see things for what they are. They are able to see football players and don't really give 2 craps about stars or the public's opinion. The days hopefully are over of staying with the same players and getting the same results. If you can consistently perform and take care of your defensive responsibility, comprehend the play calls, have had success in the type of system in previous years, then you should play. Bottom line. It shouldn't matter your class, star value, or the label that others have put on a kid, only if you are in the pool of players standing in front of Pruitt/Sherrer and out perform the others in Summer/Fall camp. Time will tell....

This was a little surprising to me. Im going to guess that he didnt like the fact he was not going to be named the started right out of the gate with the new staff. Good luck to you sir!

Hearing rumors he’s backtracking now? Apparently they are talking about it on Rivals but I don’t have a subscription.

Edit: 247 insiders saying the same thing now too

He's got a lot to consider.
Mentally he's not confident in his body right now.

Quarte Sapp is a full 20 months removed from his injury. And he has put in some serious work in changing his body to play linebacker.

Ignot is there too.
Honestly both of those are ready to play at a higher level than DK.

Right now...

But a healthy DK is the most instinctual and talented player on defense. But his body is really battling him.

He might need a fresh start. Sometimes that all it takes.
