Da'Rick Rogers Calls Out Nico

Wasn't he "The Future"? I mean, he could have scored a much better looking girl than that. The upside of paying players, I guess, is that you can buy smart ones that don't fool around with ugly hoes.

Things went very differently for Tennessee's current and former starting quarterbacks on Saturday. Joey Aguilar had a good debut in the Vols' opener against Syracuse, which Tennessee won 45-26.

Things went very much the opposite for former UT QB Nico Iamaleava in Pasadena in his debut with the UCLA Bruins. The Utah Utes blew the doors off of the Bruins in the Rose Bowl 43-10, and the struggle on the field reflected every bit of that lopsided scoreline. Iamaleava was 11/22 passing for 136 yards with a touchdown and interception. He also ran 13 times for 47 yards.

Iamaleava has become a lightning rod of controversy and commentary on social media, even as he took the field for the Bruins across the country. That includes comments from former players like ex-Tennessee WR Da'Rick Rogers, who claims he knew when Iamaleava was "hot garbage" before he even arrived in Knoxville.

First I heard about this.

He’s not wrong. Nico is a volleyball player. Now that we know what we know about his dad, it makes sense that he pushed Nico towards football and away from volleyball because that’s where the money is. And because Nico is a fantastic athlete, he could impress with physical attributes.

But Nico doesn’t have the mentality. And I’m not even sure he likes playing football.

The glorious lack of self awareness is what makes his "football is a mentality" take so great.

DaRick has a slew of issues, but I still say he was the most physically gifted WR we’ve had in a half century or more.

They talked about him on The Sports Report or whatever that UT focused show is with like 6 guys on the panel including "Sterl the pearl" and WIll Overstreet (love that dude). They were discussing who was the best player that never panned out at UT. They said even with Hunter on the team, Rogers just dominated at practice. He was unstoppable. Sad he screwed it up. If only we could have averaged 60 points per game, we could have run the table with that terrible defense.

Lay off Nico. At least he did not bring a stuffed animal to Vol Walk. Da Risk Rogers wasted a lot of talent similar to James Banks. His pajamas comment does ring true.

I feel like we are dumping too hard on Nico the kid. Nico the product made a bad choice (using family as representation) It is very very very rare that people can use their parents/friends as their representation and it work out well. Yes there are cases where it worked but for every one of those there are thousands of cautionary tales. Its a lot like representing yourself in a trail.

Nico followed bad advice. But Nico is not a bad talent. He has al lthe talent in the world and most QB's would look bad on that team. They did not lose that game because of Nico... in fact it could be said what little offensive success they had was because of him and him alone.

Da'rick is right, bad fit. He is way more talented than Joey Swag but its addition by substraction. Joey is a better QB at this point in time than Nico and thats not all that surprising he's played a LOT of football. He is a better fit for this team. I really hope NIco himself does not become a cautionary tale though the Nico situation already is. Lets seperate the 2 things? I think hes a good kid that took bad advice.
He maybe a good kid, but he made millions off UT and tried to put the screws to us to make even more. He went through all of Spring Practices as starter to go rouge the day before Spring Game. I wish him no ill, but certainly not wishing him good fortune, either.

Was Da’Rick a fit whenever he continually got popped for failed drug tests? I love him as a player but he ruined that season where we would’ve had a three headed monster with Hunter and Patterson. Could’ve scored 50 points per game but he couldn’t stay off the weed for a few months. He is the last person to speak on mentality whenever he did not have a “team first” mentality to begin with.
That was also quite some time ago. Were you a strait-laced go-getter at 19/20 years old? If so, good for you, you’re in the minority though.

I had a damn near 4.0 GPA, not because I was the smartest but because I actually worked hard and did everything that was expected from the professors. I have this thing called work ethic where I don’t want people saying I’m a crappy worker and I actually show up for my job even whenever I don’t feel well. Been that way ever since high school whenever I was working at a fast food place making minimum wage. Whenever you get into the real world you have to take these things called drug tests to get a job so I knew not to smoke weed or else that could have prevented me from getting a job. It’s really not that hard to stay away from it if you know it’s going to affect your career. Da’Rick clearly did not care enough about making money or making a career out of football. It’s called discipline. But you know, that’s just my opinion on the matter.

Edit: BTW, I’m the same age as Da’Rick so I’m not some old head scorning the younger generation. I just have higher expectations for people with God given talents like he had. Not everyone is blessed with that. Literally could have had a nice 10 years in the NFL and made enough to never worry the rest of his life. He was one of the best performers at the combine so everyone knew he had the physical traits but they didn’t want to draft him because they couldn’t trust he would be available due to the off the field concerns. It’s just sad man.

I wish we'd quit calling 20 year olds "kids"
