Dante Phillips a VOL!

Since you are so concerned with academic standards and the effect this player has on our university. I suggest reading up on this player to better understand why he was declined at Florida. It was up to them to admit him, he had been cleared to attend there but the school declined to accept him.

Its all private. We know that Florida denied him b/c of an academic reason; or so all the reports have said this one thing.

Ex-Florida DT signee going to SEC East rival? | CollegeFootballTalk

So if it is academic, and UTK has allowed him academically...?

(And yes, academic could mean a few things, some of which is not major. I am all about giving people chances, I just hope that it does not reflect an academic deficiency verses Florida, or at least in the eyes of recruits.)

Academics could always be better. My point was that this kid would have been accepted at 90% of the other SEC schools too. He was cleared by the NCAA and rejected by Florida.

UT is a big school, has great academics, and does wonderful research out in the world. Call me a hypocrite, but no...I don't care what grades those 85 students made on their high school report cards.

Cool. It does not mess with my studies. I just gave up top university's for UTK and I am glad I made that decision. I just hear so much crap from others and I find myself bragging on UTK- this sort of hurts my credibility in their eyes; not mine. I really don't care. I am glad you replied the way you did though, thanks!

So we finally have a defensive player out of the ESPN top 150!

Awesome!!!
(even though it is a nonsense ranking in some respects)

Why would they do that?

They were probably afraid he would pass clearing house. He may not clear at UT either. If there were red flags there there should be major concerns here also. Lets see what the NCAA does now. Unfortunately this isn't over yet....

Not an NCAA issue. He's already cleared. This was a Florida issue. It actually is over.

And what does this say about our academics? Is Florida that much better than us when it comes to academics? I am a grad student but I always considered UTK to be in the league of Florida, Alabama, Virginia Tech, USC, and Georgia; am I wrong? I did not expect us to be Virginia (UVA) or even Vanderbilt when it comes to academics, but at least Florida... am I the only one that is a little reserved by this news?

I would separate academics based on the football team at big schools and academics related to non football students. Besides this was supposedly a technicality on how the grades are calculeted when retaking a class. From my understanding, Vandy and Florida are the only schools that do it this way and Spurrier wanted UF to change it for years. Not that there aren't exceptions, but there are a lot of football players on SEC teams that aren't exactly tearing it up in the grades department. A lot can barely speak intelligent English when they are interviewed.
I'm okay with them getting in to UT or any other school. We give a lot of these kids a fair chance to get an education that they would otherwise miss out on and a chance to chase their dream of playing in the NFL. A lot of times football is what keeps them at least partially interested in pursuing their degree and trying to keep their grades up. I guarantee every big football school bends the rules a bit to get top players admitted. If we didn't lower out standards like all the other big football schools then we would be like Vandy. Nothing against Vandy and their academic standards, in fact I salute them for that, but they will never win an SEC title in football.
Also on the flip side, look at all the kids that have been denied admission because of that stupid extra Math class requirements in the SEC. A lot of those kids end up going to non SEC schools that have better academic reputations but lack that one requirement. That doesn't make us better than them either, just a different set of requirements for admission.
