Danny O'Brien suspended (now returning to practice)

Does it matter? Whatever it was, he knew better. And whatever it was, it was a violation of team rules serious enough to get suspended.

... you did say to kick him off the team for it. For all we know he could have missed mandatory film meetings. Being so quick to judgement without any knowledge of the incident is more of what I'm getting at. Let it play out.

O'Brien suspended indefinitely, not just for Okla.

Reports from practice are that KMac is not in playing condition. He gets winded after a few snaps, so he will be used strategically.

I keep hearing this and don't really understand. I never played FB past 12 years old because I was a bean pole basketball player. How can he not be in playing shape? I get that he wasn't in spring ball, but it's not like the rest of the team was playing summer league football all summer and he was on the couch. It's an honest question. He went thru summer conditioning right? I don't know how we are gonna get him in shape if he isn't by now. I know he missed a week or so of practice right before the season started, but hard to imagine that was enough to undo a few months of conditioning. Maybe it is and I just don't get it.

How is anyone not in shape after 5 weeks of camp and into week two of the season? What's he been doing for the last 6 weeks while everyone else is getting in shape? Out of shape makes sense if this is the first Fall Camp scrimmage or something, doesn't make sense at all for week two of the season.

Not sure about Kahlil but I agree the coaches haven't always played the best player regardless of age. You just have to look to 2014 and Worley/Peterman over Dobbs

Sometimes (quite often with young players) the best player talent wise isn't ready. So there are times you have to sit them until they are.
Now I'm sure as fans we have a much better grasp on who is and who isn't ready much more so than the coaches.

I'm probably the only one but I have mixed feelings about game suspensions for violating team rules. If it's a violation that makes the player ineligible it has to be done I understand but this suspension affects not only Danny but the team, program, University and fans. I wish we could come up with some form of punishment that only affected the guilty party. JMO and probably a naive one at that.

We don't know what happened so I don't know how anyone could form an opinion on whether the punishment fits the crime or not.

I didn't realize that KMac didn't play his HS senior year. What was his injury? It is always a major jump going from HS to major-college sport--but when you don't play as a HS senior it is even bigger.

As for O'Brien, here we have a veteran guy who does something stupid and will miss a very big game. You have a group of 85 18-21 year-old guys, you are going to get a lot of stupid, even if 3/4 of them act responsibly.

He wanted to attend the Opening. De La Salle wouldn't allow it. He transferred to the local public school. The CSAA ruled that he was ineligible because "he transferred for football reasons".

I don't think it's fair to critique Kahlil so harshly at this point. As CBJ pointed out, he has lost a lot of weight and that makes a huge difference in playing college football. He will be a great player for the Vols, and we will see him improve as the season moves forward. I'm sure the pace of play calling in practice is really challenging Kahlil's conditioning. Let's be patient and let him develop.

KMac came in @ like 340 lbs....excluding the AA game he hasn't played since the end of the 2013 season. He needs time to get in shape.

Khalil frequently getting overshadowed is kind of telling. Not saying he's a bust, but maybe he's a longer developmental situation than we'd hoped.

I think not playing football for a year prior to coming to UT is having a bigger impact on his development than many hear would like to admit.

KMac was ready to come out after a couple of plays against BG. He's a big guy, hasn't lost all the weight the coaches wanted him lose and he sat out his senior season. He'll play, but apparently he needs more conditioning to be full-go. Coaches will rotate him with Tuttle and Vickers, and we'll see how it goes. O'Brien will be missed. Whatever he did, he really let his teammates down at a critical time.

One thing I've noticed about Butch and this staff is they do an awesome job of keeping things quiet until the announcement/punishment is handed down.

Have they? From what I've seen, they've only played freshman in areas they didn't have much of a choice. I'm not buying the Khalil gets too winded too easily junk, he's the son of an NFL GM and has no doubt had access to trainers and facilities that go above and beyond what any other recruit did. Not saying he came ready to play immediately and is already on par with upperclassmen, but there's just no way he came that out of shape.

Oh you just don't know... I promise you Kmac didn't go thru anything comparable to what his teammates went thru in strength & conditioning... Just cuz his dad's a GM doesn't mean anything. I'm sure he worked out alot, but I'm sure a senior in high school has better things to do than commit 8hrs a day in the training room.

When is everyone going to get off this Khalil thing? The guy didn't play his SR year in H.S., was not an early enrollee, and contrary to the belief of some is not a God. The kid is a FR who is not in shape to play every down at this level. I hope the kid is the next John Henderson. But give him time and don't expect it to happen yesterday.

I don't disagree at all with your statement ntx and wasn't implying that I knew what the "crime" was just that I wish the punishment only affected the offending player and not the whole team, program and fans. This is a big game for the program and its continued forward momentum. Suspending the starting DT affects much more than the the starting DT. Perhaps the team rules violation was so egregious that it couldn't be handled in any other way.

What kind of idiocy leads a guy to make these kinds of bad decisions the week of a huge game? Whatever it was. Concentrate on two things--school and your team. It's not that damn hard to do.

Thanks for the Welcome but not a typo. People were expecting him to be an All-American from the time he committed and everybody wants him to play every down right now. Instant-gratification society. Just exaggerating the point of give him time.
