Dance Instructor and student detained by Police...

Personally, I would've asked the juveniles home police department to go to the parents address to verify they were actually her parents instead of a phone call.

That sounds like a more reasonable option than cuffing a guy and taking the girl to CPS.

Even though personally I think if they were not breaking any laws the police should have left them alone.

The key is that both are reasonable.. One may be better than the other for one reason or another, but that does not mean that is is unreasonable to have the trained professionals that deal with juveniles figure it out.

What was to figure out? They were telling the truth.

Is it SOP for police to assume everyone is lying now?

You know now that they were telling the truth. If, in the words of some earlier poster here, they let the 29 year old guy just leave with the 13 year old girl, to whom he is not related, and who are from another state, and who they found sleeping in a car, based on a note (notarized or not) and the girl turned up dead you'd be screaming at how incompetent they were.

LG, for the love of God will you quit making it sound like the two alternatives are Gestapo vs "there's nothing to see here". You yourself fired the opening shot that a notarized statement explaining the situation smacked of overkill and now you seem set on dismissing it as much as possible. Not satisfied with the document? Ok, but don't pretend it doesn't exist either. Want to follow up a bit more, just to be safe? OK, fine, but yeah...I absolutely expect better than how this particular case was handled.

Of course it exists, and is how the CPS people would presumably be able to track someone down to confirm.

That has no bearing on the cops turning the matter over to them. Now, it apparently took a half a day for the CPS folks to verify it. That's not the cops' fault.

No I wouldn't.

Is that what this is about? Making a tough decision? Oh ****, what oh what shall I do? Hmm...black guys, young white girl...Oh, I know, I'll cuff the black guys, and then just say, "This is the real world, and I made a tough decision."

There were numerous options available to these dumbass cops that would not have included cuffing anyone. Say, sit in the parking lot and watch the car to ensure nothing is going on. This does not even necessitate waking these individuals. If after nothing happens, the cop still isn't satisfied, follow the car so long as it is in public. If about to leave one's jurisdiction, call ahead to the next jurisdiction so they tail the car, while it is in public. None of these options requires detaining anyone; none requires restricting anyone's freedom; none requires cuffing; none requires the involvement of CPS. It does involve more work and more patience from the cops. But, after all, we lowly citizens are here to serve the cops...right?

For someone that is supposedly educated, you sure are a dumb-ass.

that sure is a lot of if's and assumptions.

there was an assumption of guilt in the face of evidence of innocence with no evidence of wrongdoing. I just can't see the justification for what they did here.

Only police, lawyers and others of that persuasion see the justification.

Now I'm thinking of driving over to Krispy Kreme. I didn't need to read that.

We stopped by the other night & got a couple dozen after the Clemson vs USC game (girlfriend is a Clemson chic). A dozen glazed & a dozen variety, $11 well spent.

I rarely have sweet foods, candies, sodas, etc. But I can eat those fresh, hot glazed donuts until I'm sick.
