Dana Holgorsen is upset

it's all if's....no one "knows" right now.

so in light of that, we are to ASSUME it's still bad, and there's been zero improvement? it's not like there's not things out there you can read and review and make some semblence of a determination of what stands the chance of being better, same or potentially worse.

but no, i'm going to take all that information, ignore it, and just assume it's not any better.....why? cause of my own bias? well we agree on that i guess.

Hey, I think we get better as season progresses too. Feel better? Lulz.

The WV coach is also using the storms they are experiencing as an excuse. Since WV is "almost heaven," couldn't he just ask God to put them on hold, or send more to Knoxville? Do they not have indoor practice facilities along with their lack of other kind of facilities?

God almost answered.

That happens a lot when you live in almost heaven.

Like I said, it's the conservative assumption. I don't know about you guys, but I'm not all about getting my hopes up for no reason, and then have them dashed if we go 6-6. 6-6 would actually be a pretty good year, but if your hopes and expectations are too high you'll be disappointed. You have to keep perspective. I am way more confident about this staff than I was about Dooley or Butch (that isn't saying much), but that's because I have reasons for doing so. Pruitt comes from a much better pedigree than either of those guys.

Yes, in the absence of hard information to the contrary, I am assuming that after just one spring practice and fall camp, the team is, for the most part, not really any better than last year, especially because they are instituting totally new systems. I don't think they're worse, but I don't think they are better either. We just hit the reset button (again) on the program, so I don't expect marked improvement until this coaching staff has a chance to settle into a season and a normalized recruiting schedule. A lot of this information and articles you speak of are from local media and UT-centric websites. I appreciate and read the content they put out there, but they are much more likely to be seeing things through orange-colored glasses. After all, they are around the program all the time and need access to it, so they aren't going to publicly bash and cast doubts about it, especially with a brand new set of coaches they need to be on good terms with.

If it makes you feel any better, I do expect the team to improve as the season goes along, I expect Pruitt to continue to recruit well, and I expect to see continued improvement into year 2.
expecting 6-6 or 7-5 isn't getting your hopes up, and you can still show a TON of improvement in the process of having a mediocore season, results wise, in a transition year just based on HOW you play.

i don't really care that you've assumed the worst. i just don't understand it. conservative it's not. it's actually going waaay out on a limb to simply assume that the performance level form last year has not changed at all, given that the whole staff and team have been working for 9 months or so, and have made zero progress. not a little, not some...NONE. that's actually a pretty liberal application of a belief to be honest. lol.

it's as big a limb to go out on as those that say they're going to get it all together and go 9-3 or 10-2....the reality is in the middle. they probably have gotten a lot better. and even at a lot better, that may only translate in to just getting to a bowl. or having the depth to make it thru the whole season while being competitive each week. or remaining healthy enough that your depth doesn't kill you late in the season.

i just don't get it is all.

Holgerson had all year to change the start date for classes at WV and now he's making excuses.

BTW, can we change Tennessee's start date for classes next year to 1 September?

Yeah, when my son was at Bama in 15 and 16, they always seemed to start classes late after the Xmas break. I don't think that was done by accident. And before the Bama jokes come in he was offered a fully funded Phd program in Geo Physics today by his advisor. He is now in grad school at NMIT&M.

Most, if not all of the detailed write-ups are written by local media/guys who do nothing but cover Tennessee. They have a vested interest in generating interest about this year's team, regardless of the situation. It's PR-type of material telling you what you want to hear. The "Trey Smith threw Abercrombie like a rag doll" story yesterday is a perfect example. #1, I would hope that an elite player who was a 5-star recruit would be able to throw a walk-on like a rag doll, and #2 if you watched the video of it Abercrombie tripped over the other O-linemen in the drill right at the end of the rep...he was hardly "thrown like a rag doll" by Smith. That was a sensational statement designed to get people like us excited about one of our top players and get excited that he is going to have a big year, especially since he missed all of Spring.

Of course the players are going to speak in glowing terms about the new coaching staff, the "culture change," etc. We won't know if any of that stuff is actually true until they start playing.

I think we will see incremental improvement, but that honestly is based mostly on last year's team underachieving. There was enough talent on that team to go 6-6, 7-5. I don't expect to see the bigger strides until year 2 and year 3.
Dang. I hate to admit everything you said is pretty much true. It's rational. But looking back, most all my happy hopeful moments from last season took place before the season actually began. The high water mark was definitely the week before georgia tech. Pretty much went steadily down every single day after that. Seriously, think about that epic crash of 2017 that was Tennessee football. It was like a ball of crap rolling down a mountain of crap. Really sticky steamy crap. You might not see that often, with the crap, usually it's snow, but you get the idea. And that ball of crap got mighty big.

Bottom line it feels pretty good to have hope again.

I'm gonna hold on to it, if you don't mind.

Kinda reminds me of an SECEast team from very recent memory, where their sorry arse coach made every excuse under the sun for why their team shouldn’t win.....who was that guy? I’m trying to remember.....somebody help me out here.....
