Dalton Bargo transferring to NC State

That is sad. No loyalty to a young man who busted his butt for the team. I hope Bargo tears it up at NC State.
One of the areas that CTV took pride in when he took the job is that loyalty is a huge thing for him. Whether it is related to coaches, players, or administration. That has now gone by the wayside as there is no loyalty in either direction. No loyalty toward players by the coaches and no loyalty toward coaches from the players themselves. I don’t fault CTV, he is playing the game with the rules that have been put in place. Either play the game or you get eaten alive. But it’s still a shame that college sports have shifted in this direction.

It is my belief that you are being very unfair making this implication about loyalty going by the wayside with Coach V. You have no idea exactly went on between Coach V and Dalton Bargo. Do you? Sources?

He didn't blame coach V. He blamed what college sports has become.

I honestly believe that both CTV and Dalton thought he would be taken in the draft. With that in mind, I can see how CTV would have discussed this with Dalton right after the season and not hold a spot for him if he didn't get drafted.

I really don’t think this situation has much to do with “what college sports has become.” It’s pretty obvious that both Coach V and Bargo thought he would get drafted and he would start his professional career. That didn’t happen, and Coach V not knowing that ended up recruiting like he normally would to fill the position.

I don’t think this is an example of not being loyal to your guy. You could make the same argument in the reverse about how keeping Bargo would be anti-loyal to one of the sophomore or juniors on the roster who thought they would get a chance to play.

Yep. I think Vitello makes it pretty clear to his prospects that his plan is to assemble as much talent as possible and then compete for the positions on the field. He also always seems generous with mixing the lineups and substitutions.

I think it is unfair to call this unloyal.

The Vols recruited and planned the roster as if Bargo and Chapman would both be gone, and those guys fully planned to get drafted and sign.

Vols can’t hold a spot for those guys with the number limitations coming into effect. Chapman returning is a product of DJ Newman getting drafted and signing

Loyalty has a time component to it. If any player, by his choosing or not, can be exited within or at the end of any season, the time component is lost. As you say, it's a brave, new, cumbersome, awful world we have to live in now.

Rent-a-Player. Rent-a-Coach.

i believe the loyalty is still there. I have experienced this with a personal friend of Kirby's and the coaching staff. The player got hurt in HS and was not fully healed so the coaching staff told them in June we just want you to know where we see you fitting in. We do not feel that you can compete for the role we had previously talked about THIS YEAR but we have a role for you that we think will prepare you for the future and your success. The player was hurt and felt deceived even though my conversation with the player and parent was the coaching staff was very honest and did it in a timely manner. The coaching staff helped the player land at a very good place for him. They still do not see it but to me loyalty was displayed because they did it in a timely manner when the player could still transfer if they wanted to and were honest. That is all I could ever ask for from a coaching staff. I do not know the details of Dalton's case but I know there have been many cases in the 6 years we've been involved where the coaching staff made a tough but honest decision and went on to help the player land in a very successful place. That is all I can ask for in life. Honesty and help.

Over the years, I’ve been around guys who have been playing for Owls and get the call that they won’t get the playing time they’re hoping for the next season. It is certainly a call a player never wants to receive, so it understandably hurts. In the circumstances I am personally familiar with (which does not include every single player from Tennessee that has played for the Owls and moved on), CTV has made phone calls to other coaches to let them know about the player, and I’m aware of players moving to the schools that CTV contacted. CTV, in my experience, at least is trying to open other doors for the player in a tough situation, versus blindly cutting the guy loose to fend for himself.

MLB needs to move the draft.
