Dale Carter

Eric Berry reminds me of a combination of Dale Carter's speed, Deon Grant's nose for the ball, and Fred White's BOOM!

Tori noel, Fred White, Jason Allen, Julian Battle, Deon Grant, Mark Jones, Gibril Wilson,& Rashard Baker. Im sure i left some above average to great safetys out since the mid 90s. My question is do you vol fans agree when i say EB is head & shoulders above all of them? Are any of these guys his equal or a just slight margin below?

I agree that EB is h&s above them. EB has that natural gift that cannot be taught. He is always in the right part of the field to make a play, just like Troy Polamalu.

You have to go back to Roland James to find someone equal to Eric Berry. Berry will probably have a similiar pro career.

There's some great players on that list but Berry is one of the best DB's college football has seen in a long time. When's the last time a safety was considered by most draft experts the best or 2nd best prospect in the draft?

...........as a junior

Dale Carter, Deon Grant, EB. All greats in their time. Its like comparing the greatest teams of all time. Just hard to do.

Dale carter. He would be so much closer to berry in the esteem of vols if he wasn`t a juco transfer.

I'll say that I would place Carter and EB as tied.

Deion has a bit of a Deion Sanders tackling problem so the other two get the nod above them.

Of course neither of them has anything on the greatest DB in UT history.....Teddy Gaines.:dance2:

Honestly, if Eric applies himself, he could be the next Ronnie Lott.

My thoughts exactly. Carter was great, but he bore little resemblance to Berry in terms of tackling ability. Furthermore, although it really can't be quantified, the body control Berry has demonstrated on some of his open-field runs is absolutely mindboggling.

Roland James was another All-American Safety and great returner from UT.
He was selected 1st round, pick 14. Played 10 years for the Patriots.

Dale Carter was a great safety, with a nose for the ball. He also had some impressive kick and punt returns. But, he was not a versatile as EB, and could not hit like EB. He could not help with run defense like EB did.

As good as Dale Carter was, he was more of a corner playing at the safety position.

Eric Turner, although 1991 was regarded going in as a pretty weak draft.

Highest drafted player at each position:
QB - Dan McGwire
RB - Leonard Russell
WR - Herman Moore
TE - Reggie Johnson
OT - Charles McRae
OG - Ed King
C - John Flannery
DE - Huey Richardson
DT - Russell Maryland
LB - Mike Croel
CB - Bruce Pickens
S - Eric Turner

This tells me that draft position is not a strong indicator of overall talent. Granted I'm not up on ancient NFL stats, but I only see 2-3 strong NFL guys on this list. I'll take Reggie, Peyton, Carter, Lewis, . . . .

Dale Carter was one of the most phenomenal athletes that I ever saw. I'd give him a slight edge over Berry in terms of coverage. He made the move from safety to corner when he got to the NFL and immediately became a shutdown corner. Berry is quite a bit better in run support, but any edge he might have over Carter as an overall player is slight.

Personally I am partial to Dale Carter, I thought he was the best not only on defense but special teams. Not to mention his Rookie of the Year honor with the Chiefs.

Good point; DC was much better with the ball in his hands. The kickoff return for a TD against Spurrier was priceless.

Dale Carter was on a team with more talent than Berry...didn't get the pub that Berry has gotten. Tennessee is on national t.v. way more than at that time...so EB has had so much more exposure. DC played in the NFL from 1992-2005 earning 4 Pro-Bowls and was Defensive Rookie of the year in 1992. Had he not had some troubles along the way, he might have been one of the best. Was he better than EB? No. Was he just as talented? Yes.

I agree with this.

i just wish berry wouldve came back for his senior year. dont blame him for going but if he wouldve returned last season may have been different.if he had he may have been held in the same regard as peyton and reggie

Also remember EB picking off Tebow everytime he went up agaisnt the guy. Zero victories though. Wonder how good grant would have been if not for that volleyball accident.

Ok I give up. What volleyball accident? I just don't remember anything like that with Deon Grant. He got busted up (left hip) before his rookie season but I don't remember anything before that. Have you got Robert Edwards and Deon Grant confused somehow?

DCarter and DGrant are the only two who come close. I think Berry is better, tho.

Remember how he dropped Tebow like a sack o' taters?

I was in school during Dale Carter's time in Knoxville. Two walkon's lived on our floor and they would tell us that during offseason workouts that started at 5am, about 4:58 some hoopty looking car would roll up blasting rap music, Carter would basically fall out of the passenger's side with smoke rolling out everywhere. He would be high as a kite and then 3 mintues later would "smoke" (pun intended) everybody in sprints.

He was that good of an athlete.

Those guys also said that Carter would own Pickens in practice and talk crap to him the entire time and Pickens was such a, well you know the word, that he couldn't even say anything back to him.

Also, hard to imagine, but the 1990 team might have the best talent of any UT team of all time including the 1999 team. You had the Offensive and Defensive NFL ROY's (Pickens and Carter) on the same team. Charles McRae and Antone Davis were first round picks off the OL. Chuck Smith and Chris Mims were first round picks as well I believe. Alvin Harper with the Cowboys, Chuck Webb at RB for a few games anyway. Bernard Dafney (RIP) as well.

Those are just off the top of my head.
