Daily Gamecock: TN Overrated Again

Why do some people still subscribe to the notion that Tennessee has been picked to be this great team and win so many games? Was this the case last year? I dont remember seeing us ranked or picked to win the SEC. When was the last time besides this year that that has happened? Maybe 2006? Overrated again? Sounds like more sour grapes.

Hard to disagree with this guy's opinion.. Especially as a gamecock. I encourage vol fans to pull the reins back a bit and temper expectations. This could end up a heartbreak season if things do not work out. Butch Jones has yet to beat Florida or Alabama and he is entering season 4. Butch Jones has much to prove, and has no means arrived to the level of a "successful" SEC head coach. Perhaps that reality will change after this season.

Honestly, the only reason that this piece would be hard for you to disagree with would be that you don't know the facts. The article starts on a FALSE premise and thengoes off at high speed in the wrong direction.

The fact is that UT was NOT expected to be in the playoff, win the SEC, or even the East for that matter. A dark horse pick means BEFORE the season that a real but UNEXPECTED possibility exists for such. That is not a prediction or expectation of such.

The Vols finished with 8 wins. Exactly where the majority predicted, which was 8 or 9. They came really close to meeting some dark horse expectations.

Not knowing facts allowed you to "not disagree" and thus be deceived by the skinny armed guy with a PC and a deadline. Pay attention!

I love how they mention our only quality win is against Georgia because they realize that they are not a quality win.

UT won 9 games last season which was precisely what most predicted they would do. Did they blow a few late games? They did but they also had no business competing with Oklahoma and Alabama in terms of talent but they did. You cannot blame a team for competing with two teams they weren't supposed to compete with. You can blame them for blowing a late lead against UF so that would have put them at 10 wins instead of nine but they still would have finished behind UF in the East.

Tennessee would have won the tiebreaker over Florida if they'd won that game last year

Funny article from a fan of a team that hasn't ever been relevant and still couldn't beat us with any consistency even in our worst of years.

Really, they need to go back to worrying about beating Vanderbilt and Kentucky so they don't finish last in the East.

Honestly, they're right. It's up to the coaches to prove them wrong. Dominate early and put games away.

No, the basic premise that Tennessee is overrated (again) is dead wrong. Tennessee began last season ranked #25 and finished ranked #22. The column states that Tennessee is always a preseason favorite but never mentions an analyst, publication or even a blogger who picked Tennessee to win the SEC East last season. Kirk Herbstreit is the only one that I'm aware of. Most everyone else had Georgia. I have found more pundits who picked Missouri to win the East last year than Tennessee. It wouldn't be so ridiculous of a column if they had even tried to support their opinion but they didn't. They simply count on the reader to have a bad memory and take their word for it.

So let me see if I understand this correctly..

Because of the fact that we almost beat teams that went to the playoffs last year..and we bring back pretty much our entire roster, that is an argument for why we are over rated?

Can someone explain that logic to me?

It's not logical. The lead blowing was early in the season and it worked itself out.. The 'Bama game wasn't exactly a "blown lead", but we can call it that if we want to try to make the point this guy is.. If this team comes back and plays like they finished the season, they'll be fine.

Also, we weren't one fumble away from trailing USCjr, we were one fumble away from them being in a better position to take that lead.. C'mon dude, we were horrendous when Butch took over, and he still hasn't lost to y'all.

Tennessee's only quality win came at home over Georgia, when the Bulldogs' star running back was injured on the first play.

This particular point absolutely irks me to no end. It's been mentioned before by many, but Sony Michel put up close to 150 yards by himself. I highly doubt Chubb would have surpassed that amount had he remained in the game. Heck, even Keith Marshall was averaging about 5 YPC for the few snaps he was in on. So every time this point gets brought up in regards to the game, I boil over with frustration because it literally makes no difference.

Copy/Paste your post on their board & see what you come up with, because I'm betting nobody knows the answer to that one. I guess he's saying we're choke artist's?

Who knows how many yards they would've run for without their linemen ending Tuttle's season.

USCe is just looking for someone to share in their misery. Spurrier built their program to levels they had not seen then allowed it to fall apart around him. Then... in typical Steve, he saw it was a losing situation and quit them.

They're angry and confused about who to attack.

eh...it panders to it's anti TN audience and got some folks here riled up...mission accomplished.

USCe is going to have a tough year this year, and i'm wondering what kind of article will be written when they lose to Vandy on Thursday? as for us....we won the SC game like we lost the Bama game. we won the GA game like we lost the FL game.

it's football, the breaks go both ways....except in the GA game, even w/out Chubb, they still found themselves up 24-3.....it's easy and convenient to say "yeah but chubb didn't play". it's another to day the Vols, who gave up 3 4th qtr leads already this season found themselves down 3 TD's at home......and finish that story.
