Da Reds thread

pirates look great right now. the reds have looked like a beaten team since the middle of june. i think it is the difference between a good manger like hurdle and a crap manager like baker. i look for the dbacks or dodgers to get the last wildcard spot.

Pirates fans were saying similar things prior to this week, especially after dropping 2 out of 3 to you guys and 2 out of 3 to the marlins coming out of the break. Yes dropping this series to the Padres looks bad right now, but if you guys take a series this weekend against a division rival opinions quickly change. The 3 nl central teams are very similar in that they have had good pitching but an often anemic offense. Until any of the 3 teams can find a way to consistently drive in runs I am not willing to count any team in the central out

Whoa whoa whoa the Cardinals offense has been anything but anemic until these previous 6 games...

Your right, really should not have grouped them in with the Reds and Pirates in that category :hi:. You look back though at what they have done against good pitchers (which they will face quite a few of these past couple of months) I'm not sold on their offense putting up that many runs especially with Yadi out for a bit.

I'm with you on Yadi no doubt.

i'm surprised the pirates didn't make a move for a big bat.

With Alex Rios apparently being the biggest bat available and the White Sox reportedly having a huge price tag on him I'm glad we didn't. Made a run at Stanton and Trumbo reportedly, but neither were actually available.

well can still deal after the deadline, maybe price will come down. i think you guys are one really good bat away from having all the pieces.

So it's OK for the Cards to hit Beltran second on the line-up, but not OK for the Reds to hit Votto there? Right. The #1 team in RISP can do it, but not the mid-pack RISP Reds. Oh, that's right, it's a Dusty rule we have to stay lefty/righty.

When you have 7 good hitters in your lineup rather than 4 you can be much more flexible. Joey Votto not hitting 2nd is the least if our problems.

Joey Votto had a 3 RBI game yesterday. The first once sense September 12th last season. These 3 RBIs yesterday can via a 3-run homerun. His first 3-run home run since June of last year.

Which is the point I have been making for months. He leads the league much of the time on OBP. He is no longer a clutch hitter in terms of RBI's. This team is a 4 run per game team. So make sure you get the 4 runs with Choo and Votto the best combo in the league for OBP. Give BP, JB, TF, DM and even CH more opportunity to knock in runs. Add in Luddy, if he makes it back and can hit, which is not going well so far.

You can win a lot of games with a good pitching staff with 4 runs per game. The Braves did it for years. You will not beat the Cards if they have good pitching - they are a better team. But you can beat the Pirates as offensively they are a little worse off. They also rank last in MLB in RISP.

One final truth statement. Do not attempt to use junkball pitchers against the Cards. They light up finesse guys. Power pitchers with a ready pen is the only way to beat them consistently. That is not just based on this past weekend. That is their history over the last few years.
