Da Reds thread

You seriously have no idea what us stat guys are actually saying, so stop being silly and let it go.

Actually, I know quite well what you stats guys are selling. Billy would be so proud of you. In fact it works so well that everybody is doing it and winning WS every year - right? You can't take the heat, can you daddy? Some ground rules for this conversation. I will say exactly what I think as long as it is according to VN rules and you can take your condescending comments and stick them. If you want to talk baseball, talk it. But don't pretend you know the game by spouting useless stats that are seen in the rear view mirror.

Example: Tell me why JV is worth $20+ million a year, when that $20 million exists because teams overpaid for PEDs users and aging stars that set the market expectation before the gig was up - with the club owners looking the other way as long as the cash registers were ringing and until the feds upset the gravy train. Use your calculator and figure out how much each one of his 47 RBI's are costing when the money could be allocated for real help. And don't come back with an accusation I am saying JV is using PEDs - his stats say that cannot be possible.

Actually, JV is showing signs of coming out of his power loss. So tell us all exactly how he is doing that since that will reveal real baseball knowledge. Then go on and explain how Mike Leake has made a 180 - just what has he done? I could go on with each one of them and we could see what you really know.

Leake is doing a better job of keeping the ball in the yard... sometimes a sign of permanent change, sometimes a fortunate stretch. He's striking out and walking similar numbers compared to last year. His strand rate is very very favorable... 71% last year vs 83% this year. Probably a large factor in the lowered ERA.

He has really shined away from home (which isn't surprising... most parks will treat him better than GABP).

Sorry for looking at those stats from the past rather than all those stats that haven't happened yet.

Also, not that I even ****in care, but idk how votto's stats let us know that PEDs are an IMPOSSIBILITY.

Ever since the knee injury last year the power isn't the same. He was on pace to hit like 50+ doubles at least last season prior too. I think he's either not completely over it or compensating a bit due to being scared to hurt it again.

To the bold, in order:
1) I'm not selling anything.

2) Go read "The Extra 2%" about Andrew Friedman and numbers and how they are one of the lowest payroll teams in MLB yet have great success.

3) You were the one talking about how "stat guys" like myself know nothing when nobody said anything to you. I fired back because you obviously don't know enough nor care to know about advanced stats.

3) Well, because nobody in the world gets on base like him. Votto is worth $20M easily no matter his power numbers because he does the most important thing in the game basically better than everyone else: get on base.

4) Votto has been worth 4.3 fWAR this season. Now, if you believe what some baseball economic people tell you (and I don't think this stat is bulletproof, but I'll use it anyways), 1 win above replacement player is worth $5M. Votto actually has exceeded his $20M value already in that realm. Also, Votto has a .287 average with RISP, which is above average. So he still is doing pretty well, and compare that to his average of this year of .321, it eventually will even if he keeps up his batting average. Either way, with Votto's elite 1B D and top notch OBP, he's easily worth the $20M. He's not 2010 Votto, but he is damn good at baseball, one of the 20 best hitters in the game.

5) Leake has been keeping the ball in the park. He's also been lucky with a BABIP drop of 40 points even though his K rate and BB rate are about the same. His LOB% 8% above his career norm. His LD% is down five points, so it seems like he is inducing weaker contact. However, his FB% rate is up and his FB/HR ratio is down significantly. That usually doesn't happen, while is pitch f/x discipline is the same. Basically, he's getting weaker contact, but he's also been lucky as hell based on stats (think Jair Jurrjens in 2011).

It can sap some power. He probably won't be 2010 Votto, but if he keeps up his D and .400 OBP, he's worth the $20M.

reds are a horrible team right now. like i said season over.

The season is over at the end of July for a team that has a 4.5 game lead on a wild card spot? I'm not going to sit here and say that everything is perfect for the reds but there is still plenty of baseball left for them.

It would help if our #1 starter and some of our key bullpen guys show up sometime before the end of the season. I don't think Ludwick will be our savior, but let's be honest we just haven't been super healthy all year long. Guys have stepped up and done the best they could. But the losing lately is not fun. Looking at the pirates at the top really hurts. They have played well and deserve to be where they are, but it still hurts.

Pitching is the least of our problems.

pirates look great right now. the reds have looked like a beaten team since the middle of june. i think it is the difference between a good manger like hurdle and a crap manager like baker. i look for the dbacks or dodgers to get the last wildcard spot.

Absurd. We have gotten nothing basically from LF, SS, and 3B all season offensively. That ain't on Dusty. Mind you I'm no Dusty fan but jeez at some point it's on the players to perform...

i can agree with that, but it has to be on somebody. soto should be called up and replace frazier. dusty leaving cozart in the 2 hole most of the season shows how smart he is. i'm beginning to think that the reds should send jocketty packing and go back and get krinsky. so far jock has got 2 really good pitchers in the draft and nothing else. seems like krinsky drafted better players and jock makes better trades. for the talent on this team there is no reason for them to suck this bad. so who would you put the blame on.

Management resigning Broxton to an absurd contract. Mismanaging the Chapman situation. Resigning Ludwick who for most of his career has been a barely average major leaguer. Trading Travis Wood for Sean Marshall. And finally for banking on Cozart and Frazier who were never highly rated prospects and hoping they'd somehow develop into serviceable players. Frazier is closer than Cozart to do that and I'm willing to give him more time but unfortunately Zack just isn't very good.

We're also extremely thin in terms of hitters throughout our minor league system.

Oh and there's also the Rolen trade that Jocketty orchestrated. Looking back on it now its clear that the Blue Jays fleeced us on that one. Encarnacion wouldve looked damn good in the middle of our order the last few years and obviously this year.
