D-Will to Play in Turkey?

On PTI they said the same team wants Kobe. I wonder what stars are going to end up playing over there? I would. It's a decent bargaining chip.

If enough players go to Turkey, the folks wanting to see Lofton against NBA talent might get close to their wish. Of course, Lofton has to get back to Turkey.

Capitalism at it's finest. Go with the market that is actually paying. The NBA sure isn't.

D-Will predicts an Exodus to Europe if owners don't "play ball". Though I disagree in the short run, in the long run it's inevitable. Basketball is getting as big in Europe as soccer is here. If the MLS can bring in Beckham, Marquez, Henry, and Lundberg then their is no doubt in my mind that European hoops teams will eventually bring in marquee ballers on the reg. The owners are probably speeding up this process.

Mls to euro basketball is a good analogy. It's where over the hill stars go to make a few more good checks.

It won't always be that way, and IMO, those guys could still cut it in the best leagues while they were playing in the MLS (definitely not their primes, though).

Also, UEFA enacted new rules about payroll, but I'm not sure of all the details and how it will go down. My understanding is in order to participate in UEFA club tournaments, your club cannot operate with a deficit. This could potentially send more star-power to the MLS. Maybe some in-house soccer experts at VN can clarify this.

I don't think the Euro leagues could sustain NBA grade salaries for the stars over a long haul.

I thought a lot of the countries over there are teetering on the brink of financial catastrophe.

Not Germany, France, etc. Turkey actually had the fastest growing economy in the world last year. Faster than China and India.

Turkey will be a power in the region in the coming century, I suspect.

As one of the resident hockey fans here, the NHL saw a minor exodus to Europe in each lockout (1994 and 2004). The situations aren't entirely comparable, since a good chunk of the NHL's player population and star population are from Europe originally, but there were some interesting issues. Several Swedish players announced that they were going to play in front of their home country, only to hold off until late in the calendar year to skirt Sweden's draconian tax laws. There were also cases where certain players were barred from being able to sign in certain countries due to criminal histories.

If Damon Stoudamire plays overseas, I can foresee an NBA version of "The Midnight Express" taking place.

Damon Stoudamire is coaching at the University of Memphis and is retired from the NBA.
