D. Johnson’s Impact Was & Will Be Missed?

He should be back for Kentucky. Think the rule for targeting is that you are out for the half you are in plus the next half. So if you commit targeting in the 2nd half of a game, you're out for the 1st half of the next. Since he committed in the 1st half against Georgia, he was out the 2nd half, but back for Kentucky.

“First off, it was a bad decision on his part. He took 2.5 steps. The whole thing about, really any defenseless player, if you can avoid contact and you see that, it’s your job as a defensive player to do that. I always felt like this rule, there’s probably inconsistency in the rule. It’s a good rule though, because it helps our game and it helps protect our players. But, it is a tough rule to kind of enforce. There have probably been some inconsistencies in my opinion over the years. I think that Deandre should’ve avoided the quarterback, it’s pretty simple. He knows that.”

It just wasn't our day.

Yeah I actually just saw that. Really hurt our team doing that. He is too good to make those plays.

at this point i wish he woulda smashed him
I would probably have to agree with you. Thats the weakest targeting that I've seen to date. I'm not arguing that it wasn't and it definitely was a dumb thing to do, but if youre going to do that, at least make the guy feel it and leave a lasting memory for him.

Was a cheap shot and an extremely dumb play. Maybe a 15 yarder for unnecessary roughness. But has anyone ever seen a targeting get called for something like that?

Yes I have. I don't think many people were shocked that they called it targeting. None of the 8 Vols fans I watched with...not CJP, and not DJ. Nobody argued. It wasn't a shocker

Please post a video of it. I’d love to see it

It was silly but if you do it get your money's worth, put him in the air and make him look out of his earhole.

He is NOT out of the Kentucky game, it happened in the first half he missed the second half. I expect next year players will be allowed to stay in the game unless it is ruled he intended to harm player. There is a big push for intent to be put back in the rule. Players have by and large adjusted well, and most or many of the head to heads with a bang bang type of deal and the intent was not there to intentionally hit them in the head. There would still be a penalty but the player would not be ejected from the game. Of course it one launches or spear one with the crown of their helmets and it looks like he tries to make that type of contact intentionally he could still be ejecting for the half. They don't make players in the NFL leave nor should they, players have adjusted and the game is soft enough as it is. Just look at games nowdays players make a textbook hard slobberknocking hit and the fans oh and ahh and the ref throws the flag and then once they look at it to a chorus of boos from the call they change the call. Well at least I am glad they are looking at it and picking up the flag when it is a legit hit. Football is supposed to be hard hitting. GBO!!!!!!

It was late. It was completely unnecessary and it was stupid. He should have received a 15-yard PF penalty. The targeting call was ridiculous and stupid.
He lowered his head and make contact with the crown of his helmet with Stepson's helmet...when i saw the replay I knew he was toast.

I agree that they followed the letter of the rule. I just think the officials have to be able to use a little bit of discretion to judge the severity of impact. The rule exists to protect players from getting hurt. Nothing about that contact endangered anyone. That was a love tap and he got the ultimate penalty, which is the same penalty that someone gets when they spear a defenseless receiver in the ear-hole at full speed across the middle. It's beyond stupid. And we've all seen countless more dangerous hits that didn't even get a flag thrown.
