I agree with SWIL, Chavis is a beast. Does anyone know why SEC defenses are so much better than everyone elses? It's because Chavis was the first to bring the 4-3 defense to the SEC. Chavis is creative and usually consistent (when his team is healthy).
I think the SEC teams put their fastest and most athletic players on D along with Miami and Florida State.

What's wrong with Chavis?? The Vols have a consistently dominate defense for years b/c of him. This years wasn't so hot, but historically, Chavis is the man.

Agreed.... we had to replace six of the front seven this year and then lost him after the Florida Game.

We will be a lot better on D next year.

yep, all that has worked out well for UT since 1998, hasn't it? Granted, we were close in 2001, until a late 4th quarter drive by LSU couldn't be stopped by the defense. Sound familiar? You can use all the excuses you want, but UT's record since the NC speaks for itself. There are very few marquee victories against top 10 opponents and a bowl record that includes humiliating losses to Maryland, Clemson, and now Penn State.

Other than the Air Force game this past season, when is the last time Chavis' defense came up with a big time stop and preserved a victory?

Chavis is good vs. medicore to lesser talented offenses. Typically good oc's have out foxed Johnny C in the past.

D couldn't come up stop vs. LSU here this year. "D" melted in the Fla game too. Just to name a couple.

i don't think anyone, fans or opponents, were confusing this year's defensive personnel with the likes of leanard little, al wilson, john henderson, albery haynesworth, darwin walker, parys harelson, omar gaither, jason allen, deon grant, etc..........

Chavis is like most good defensive coordinators. He looks great when he has the talent.

IMO Chavis developed his defensive philosophy behind the need to stop a good passing team (Spurrier). he likes to puts lots of pressure on the QB. The DL are very aggressive and the LB's blitz frequently.

That works well when your playing a team that likes to pass and doesnt like to pick-up the blitz with RB's.

when you playing an option team the DE's and LB's overplay because of their aggressiveness and are out of position.

Its hard to do both well.

That is funny, I always thought UT's trademark and strength was stopping the run. I don't remember Chavis' defenses withstanding Spurrier's onslaughts.

I understand what Oklavol is saying. To beat SOS you needed to pressure the QB at all cost. But in saying that he never really stopped them. Even in 98' the QB tandem had over 300 yards, but lots of turnovers helped win that one. His main philosophy has always been stop the run first, and at all cost. Leaving the weakest part of the "D" exposed (DB's). In a time of blitz packages his hasn't changed. And how many times have we all said "we made that guy look like an all-american". And OklaVol is exactly right about the option. Really curious to see how we react when Tebow is running the Gator "O" full time. Just one mans opinion.

Stevie always got the better of Chavis while @ UF as has Richt, most of the time at GA.

Tell you what I used to hate was the Mustang he so dearly loved and was always backfiring.

He has for the last several yrs been good vs. the run. Not this past year though.

Let's see - 2006 UGA scores 19 offensive points
2005: 27
2004: 14
2003: 34
2002: 18
2001: 26

Looks like they've been trading blows.
