How many of you guys and gals think we will see an offense that is as smooth as the Manning offense's were and even the Tee Martin offense of 98?? Either way its exciting to look at and I can't wait until we score on the third play from scrimmage against Cal, whether we are on defense or offense.....

The 98 offense ran so smooth because of the offensive line and Jamal Lewis (early on) and then Travis Henry.

Get that dominance back at the line then it'll look the same.

that's a mighty bold statement....i don't think it will be that "smoothe". it should be improved, especially in the running game, i don't know you can expect the same or better passing game this year with the WR question marks....sure it could happen, but to expect it at this point.....can't do it.

having a sr qb helps a ton though......i'll be absolutely shocked if EA regresses this season.

Other than Joey Kent and Marcus Nash though, who was Manning's down field threat, Jermaine Copeland?? Peyton made his receivers look good with great passes on the numbers and I think EA will do the same for his this year. We have more weapons now than Manning did here at UT. How those weapons do will be up to them though.

I don't think that will happen. Ainge has been more confident this offseason than any of the years he has been here. He knows he is the leader. He knows he is the man and with Cutcliffe going to the no huddle it has just instilled that much more confidence in him.

He may not put up numbers like last season due to an inexperienced WR corp, but he will be the sharpest you've ever seen him.

Man I love the Vols and I like this team a lot. But you are on crack if you think we have even the same amount of talent. Just on the Oline and RB's. Not to mention the studs we had on defense.

This is an offensive discussion, so the studs on D don't have anything to do with this convo. We are 4 deep at RB too and our O-line looks like the O-line's of old from what I have seen. I maybe wrong on this, but I really think that you will be surprised.

If you noticed I said NOT to mention the studs on D.

But of all of the RB's none have shown the ability to even hand Lewis or Henry a towel.
That O line had 3 or 4 that wound up in the NFL and Manning had Kent for 3 years to get into rhythem with.
Like I said I like this team a lot but I also remember well the talent we had then.

careful Beef, you know what happens to folks around here when you start criticizing the team....you get that old "negavol" tag...........:eek:lol:

incidentally, i agree with you about the O lines and JK and MN vs. current crop of WR's. we may have a couple of future JK's and MN's, but they'll have to develop in to that....

I'm not knocking this team at all and I fully understand getting very excited about the beginning of a season. But I guarantee you if CPF had the option of trading this O line for the 97 Oline or this group of RB's for the 97 group of RB's he would do it in a second. The WR's as well. Kent was not the fastest but he caught everything thrown his way and found a way to seperate.

As far as Cutcliffe goes, I don't think this version we have now bears much resemblance to that one that coached Peyton.

This '07 version seems much more willing to adapt offensive style to offensive talent. And the time as an HC seems to have made him a better communicator.
IF... we see on the field what has been hinted at this offseason, Cutcliffe will have completely transformed himself into a modern day OC. And if that occurrs, none will be happier than I....

If the O-line can consistently get a push on run blocking we will have a good year offensively. Being able to run will open up the pass - and our pass blocking was good last year. If Ainge has time to find his targets and our rushing keeps the D honest - our receivers will do a decent job.

interesting take on it.....honestly i hadn't thought of it that way, but you are probably correct.

It will begin and end with the O-line.If they are able to run on cal with them loading the box,it will demoralize them and they will say here we go again. Then everything else will open up and we just might surprise some people as to how smooth the offense can be.But on the flip side,we don't run block well all bets are off.I expect this team to model themselves after some of our past teams in the late 90's.Run,run,run mix in some play action.

If they load the box then even our young WR will get open. If they load the box look for passes in the flat for 6.

no way,but things will be mighty interesting,if they hit the tight ends early and if Foster does well,Ainge will do well, hope the recivers are up to it

If you mean no way to my post then I have to disagree big time. One of the best things Cal could do for us is load the box. If you wanna help a young WR make it one on one. Seperation close to the line or in the flat will be much easier for them, not to mention the famous screens that Cut likes to throw. I hope they load the box on us.

cal will definetly load the box with all those new WRs you have. I disagree it would be beneficial for you.

I hope Tedford does as well. Even young WR can get open for short passes in the flat. You add speed to that equation or TE's with size over the middle? I like that defensive set up for our team. Our young WR have one thing in common. Speed! You let them catch the ball in the flat and it will be 6. No help against speed is a great recipe for us.

our secondary isn't slow. if oneal was looking better in practice i would be more concerned. we shall see though. I really think you guys are going to have problems moving the ball in the first half while ainge and the receivers get their timing down.

When they paired down the playbook, O'Neal and Vinson started to shine this last week. Watch out.

Do you know where the flat is? Do you know what a screen is? If Cal loads the box look for those spots to be owned by our young WR's. Once they get the ball in their hands all it will take is one miss and it will be 6. That is why loading the box against speedy WR's and a SR QB is dangerous. Especially in a no huddle when your DB's will be looking to see what EA will be calling next and don't get a blow. I like our chances against that defense.
