As to the comments of his "jumping ship"... He went to Ole Miss to be HC. He went to Duke to be HC. He was not satisfied to be a asst HC or coordinator. David Cutcliffe wants to be a Head Coach....and he thought that would never happen at Tennessee because, like a lot of us, Fulme would be HC as long as Fulmer wanted to be...and it didn't look like Fulmer was ready to leave anytime soon.

If he comes in as Tennessee's HC, it will be different. He will Stay.

You can have Cut and the Roper Bros.

I'm not as anti-Cut as a lot of people on the board. Between Chief and Cut they kept Fulmer employed in spite of himself. I just don't think his staff is worth a damn.

settling for cut is like convincing yourself that the ugly girl is OK because the hottie just dumped you. and no, i'm not talking about layla.

if cut is the right choice now, why was he not the right choice last time?

i see upsides, and downsides, with every name that is out there. with cut i see debates about whether we will get to a bowl game each year.

It could work out fine...if he has some people on staff who can recruit. Cut, like Fulmer, is loyal to a fault to his assistant coaches. You have to be willing to cut someone loose if they don't perform.

If he brings his staff and fires the guys we have now, it will be unspeakably awful.

Cut will want full control over who he has on his staff and i think that is the only reason he hasn't been named officially already. Kippy, Thompson need to stay. I've never been impressed with the Roper boys, leave them at Duke.

Yes, exactly my fear. I am not against Cutcliffe unless he wants to do just that. I look at what he did in 2006 after the horrible 2005 year, almost beat the MNC for 2006 UF, I think if Fulmer hadn't pushed to switch to run mode in the 3rd with what 1 rushing yard up by 10 points, they would have won that game. I remember listing the next morning where they asked Cut who made the decision to do that and he said it was Fulmer. Then Ainge got hurt. The next year they went to the SECCG almost beat the MNC LSU.
THe next year after he leaves, 5-7 which I might say with a couple of good kicks could easily of been 7-5 ( what happened this year).
In the press conference I remember Lane talking about how the record is improved and part of his resume was how close they came to beating Bama, but I recall it was also close to a blowout, without a fumble by Bama and an onside kick at the end of that game (basically a miracle) it would not have even been close.

Ut can do much better than a retread like cutcliffe and a bunch of mediocre coaches on the duke staff.

This is what bugs me too. I can't believe he wants to bring that staff over the ones who are in Knoxville now.

That's why I think Kippy with the remaining staff in Knoxville and building around them is the better of these two options.

Jimmy Hymens just reported on The Sports Animal that Cut was definitely not coming, and was staying at Duke (no joke).

With that, I expect him to be named as the new HC before the next commercial break.

So, if Hymens finally gets one right, we will be able to avoid three years of, "Fulmer: The Sequel", after all.

He also said that he has heard that they're meeting with Lovie this AM.

Because Cut and Fulmer are friends and Cut would not have wanted to take Fulmer's job from him, and others that wanted Fulmer out would not have wanted someone perceived to be that close to Fulmer.

Yet Cutcliffe is not Fulmer. But Cutcliffe is deep in Tennessee tradition which is something we really need right now, not some cynical yankee mercenary who is only here until he gets a better offer somewhere else. Come on, Coach Cut. Keep Thompson, Brown and Cregg at least, and please bring Vol Marion Hobby back from Duke with you.

I am sure that Cutcliffe is a good guy and yeah he coached the Manning brothers. But, why does UT need to bring up the past. What does everybody think Cutcliffe will bring to the table. When Florida lost Spurrier they first hired Ron Zook and everybody saw how that went. Eventually they hired Urban Myer. As much as I dislike Florida, Urban Myer is a great coach. Why can't they give someone else a chance. Are we not as good as Alabama or Florida? Why can't we get a coach that will give us a chance to win a championship?

Getting off the Lane Train into the Cut Caboose (bring up the rear of the SEC)!:banghead2:

The last time Cut was here, we were in the SEC championship game representing the East (not Florida). He imposed discipline. We had a balanced offense with a 1000 yd rusher. We won 10 games. I'd take that again. Come on, Coach Cut. :good!:

We got about two weeks until National Signing Day and big name recruits have been scheduled to come in this weekend. There are very few coaches who could come in here and gear up on super-short notice, but Coach Cut is one of them. Yeah, we'd like to take our time and run a leisurely national search for a head coach, starting in October or November when such changes are normally made, but that is just not the situation we are in right now. We are in damage control. Cut has been able to right our ship in the past and I can't think of anyone better qualified to do it right now.

Cut left the cupboard bare at Ole Piss, If you can't recruit in the SEC you don't last. Good offensive coordinater though. Glad we are not hiring a re tread.

By no means would I be a fan of this hire but Cutcliffe as far as I know he has also been successful with other quarterbacks (i.e. Tee Martin, and Erik Ainge). I hope we get Whittingham.
