"Tennessee recruited Powell hard after he left Vanderbilt, he said, but its scholarship package didn't match Georgia's.

Powell started all 36 games for Volunteer State and led the team in batting (.468), doubles (15), runs (51), walks (25) and stolen bases (34). His batting average ranked seventh nationally among Division I junior college players."

Wow Raleigh...he puts up huge numbers (especially the .468 BA) and the Vols can't even match the scholarship package...another Farragut player going elsewhere...although I can't blame anyone for not wanting to play here at the moment

Curt Powell to sign with Georgia GoVolsXtra

I am guessing that this means that by the time this kid decided to graduate early from JUCO, TN had already allotted all of their scholarship money for next year. Not that we just did not want to give him enough money.

It is frustrating that we could not allocate enough funds to such a talented player that is a local kid. Even worse if the kid had qualified for some the hope scholarship or anything else like this.

Raleigh should have plenty of scholarships available next year..he's losing Polk, Morgado, McCray, Hawn, Liles, Forsythe...all of those guys have full or close to full scholarships.

Only Morgado and and Hawn are locks to leave.

The hatred of Raleigh by the current team isn't what many here believe or would like to believe.

Deerpark12 my poor uninformed friend you know not what you speak (write).... hatred runs too deep. Too much humiliation and degradation has taken place..there will be many who will leave. Raleigh is not a good coach for many reasons.. I always wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt..after talking to many of the players parents and the players themselves.. those that can leave will leave. The man acts like a tyrant and unfortunately a bully. (Mike Hamilton does not give a Crap about the players or the program..that is for certain.)

Deer has proven he usually knows what he's talking about when it comes to the programs at UT. I give him the benefit of the doubt, because in what I've seen he's usually right.

That's not the way I hear current players describe him publicly or privately. Most are planning on returning unless they're high draft picks.

There are several bitter former players who were run off that tell horror stories, that's for sure. Most of those are guys that were recruited by the former staff that were run for various reasons from total disregard for academic policies to multiple failed drug tests.

One former player who has been very vocal in local baseball circles was dismissed after declining to enter the outpatient drug treatment program that is required after a set number of failed tests. He can go out and slander the coaching staff all he wants because the reason for his parting with the program has to stay confidential under student/medical privacy laws.

Look, I've said before and I'll say again that I don't think he's going to get it done in the long run at Tennessee. I don't think another year is going to make a big difference. But many here have painted him with this large brush that isn't completely accurate and is cobbled together from former players with a reason to have a vendetta. The players on this team don't hate him any more than any other athlete on campus hates their coach on any given day. They didn't quit on the staff at any point this year, and it would have been really easy to do at 4-11 in the conference. They aren't chomping at the bit to get off this campus.
