Currie will hire someone not on "the list"

Every coach we have hired has been someone that wasn't on the list the media posted.

Lane Kiffin was never mentioned.
Derek Dooley was never mentioned. I didn't hear his name until after I googled his name after the hire.
Butch was never mentioned but I knew him since Dooley beat him.

We have been hiring coaches so much we should be pros by now. I expect for our hire to be a complete surprise. I would be willing to bet that it will be a we haven't even thought about.

I know it's fun to talk about, but stop getting mad about "the list" because I guarantee you the only person who knows the list is Currie and a VERY select few.

no he wasnt, until very near the end after everyone else on the list said no. At least not any list put out by the press or anyone on VN.. .

I admit. I wanted him. Didn’t know the dumbass AD would hired the unemployed SOB with a huge buyout on his end but let Kiffin run for $800k. People that stupid should be beat in public stocks.

I read Vol Nation. Everyone is on a list. The last one missing rolled in today "Johnny Majors". Every rock has been overturned and looked under. Freak had to buy more terabytes.

Here is my new coach hunting strategy - so much banter here. As many pro opinions as con opinions batted around for all, including Jon.

Fact: We WILL have a new coach by Dec 10th.
Fact: All the banter here has no sway one way or the other.
Fact: I'm going to shut it down on my end and fire it back up on Dec 11 (or sooner) and see what Santa left under the tree.
Fact: No matter who it is, if it ain't "your guy", the b*tching will ensue. I'll be here for it.

Lastly- Whoever the new coach ends up being, I will be behind him 100% until he gives me a reason not to. Go Vols.

Just goes to show that the in the know, talking head pontificators can be wrong.

And I am glad AD Currie is being reticent. It's a tactic that may trip up other schools.

It has been 40 years since the Vols hired a guy with college Head Coaching experience who was known coast-to-coast.

Don't see Captain Funny Socks breaking that trend.

This is prime bar bet material. Want to make it interesting? Loser has to post something wildly anti-Gruden in the Gruden thread every day until the new coach is hired.

They have always not been able to close a deal on top target. Op is right. They will drop down so low it will be someone even google can’t find. They had rather pay the big money on the buyout than the hire.

Lane Kiffin was at the top of the list. Gary Patterson even said that he thought they already made up their minds that Kiffin was the one. His name was all over the place with relation to our job.

Well, just as a quick example, Kiffin was mentioned several times in a thread called Who do you want if Fulmer leaves? from September '07, well more than a year before Fulmer was canned.

There is no reason whatsoever to go with an obscure name. None of the coaches on the list are out of our league. They need to go with a name brand or they'll be paying another hefty buyout in a few years.
