Based on Curries statement, I believe Schiano was his guy from the get go. He already had a relationship with him prior to coming to UT. I personally believe the reason he didn't fire Jones sooner was because he wanted to make sure Schiano was interested and probably wanted to have an offer ready to lay on the table. As soon as that was solidified and Jones lost to Missouri, Currie had the clearance to fire Butch. In his press conference he said he wasn't using a search firm and that the players should believe no one until Currie tells them who the new coach will be. Then in what should have been a critical time, Currie goes to the Bahamas with the Basketball Team. And as soon as Ohio State finished their regular season and Schiano was available, Currie was ready to seal the deal. If it hadn't leaked to the public on Sunday, Schiano would have been named HC on Monday. I'm convinced Currie had no other candidates. It was Schiano and Schiano only. .

If those numbers of his contract would’ve been accurate, there is no way he had any other candidate in mind.

Several threads discussing this, but yes, you are correct. Pretty obvious that Currie was hired by Haslam. Haslam had Schiano in mind from the day he hired Currie.

If so, the best thing that could happen is it backfire.

I'd even guess that Butch might have been undermined, but who knows.

It's pretty obvious he only had eyes for Schiano.

Had no idea there would be a noxious pushback, and is currently scrambling to over pay as much as financially feasible to get this guy:

It certainly seems that Currie’s list was:

1. Schiano
2. Schiano
3. Schiano

I think Currie was looking to establish himself as decisive and fully “in charge” with this hire. I think back on seeing video of him standing on the field after losses with his tough-guy mean face on knowing that the cameras were rolling.

Currie appears incompetent and an egomaniac. Not good. Fulmer should be the AD. Currie should be employed elsewhere.

Yeah. It was Haslam's guy. Currie is Haslam's sock puppet. Til that changes not sure much else does around there. Get Gundy and we'd at least have a decent coach for the first time since Douche bag left in the middle of the night.

I'm not sure that Schiano was his ONLY candidate (Mullen, Frost), but it does seem crystal clear that they didn't do their due diligence in putting feelers out to 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or more other names to just broach the conversation. When you have such a short list and you have literally no open channel of communication to anyone else, you end up where the UA AD is now.

I agree with you 100%. Why hire a search firm when you already have your pick. I hope after the next coach is hired, currie is fired.

Schiano was an old buddy of Currie's.

Haslam wanted to hire him to coach the Bengals, but had to back off after resistance from the then GM and someone else (I've lost track, lol.)

Currie and Haslam both wanted Schiano, no one else, and this would have been a done deal had it not been for the unnamed UT assistant AD who waited until Currie's plane was in the air and then leaked it.

Your tax dollars at work, folks.

I don't get it, for his 1st major move as AD this was terrible. I'm not saying that we get Gundy but Currie will be working is butt off to keep his job. At the end of the day, we'll get a quality coach.

I think they feigned interest in Mullen just for appearances but it was ****ano the entire time. The lexpensive and explosive” hire was a DC that not a single other school was courting.

I haven’t heard the AD making any overture toward Frost at all. Now we are going after Gundy again so he can get another raise at Ok St.
